VANDIVER J. ,VAN HORN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ORNAMENTAL `SRAM FOR SEWED ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented June 16, 1914.
Application .filed February 13, 1911. Serial No. 608,369.l
To all z vhom it may concern y y Be 1t known that I, VANnrvnn J. VAN HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State In the d rawings z-Figure l is a plan View of a portion ot' fabric having my ornamental seam formed therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail ot' the seam shown in Fig.4 l with the fabric omitted. Fig. 3 is a-View similar to Big. 2, showing a slightly 1nodilied position of the threads.
The fabricl, is provided with two par* allel lines or' stitching 2 and The needle punctures in the line of stitching 2 are indicated at 4, While the needle punctures in the line of stitching 3 are indicated ato. An ornamental thread 6 is formed into. half twisted loops which. are oppositely disposed and the loops on one side of the seam are entered by alternating needle punctures, while the loops on the other' side of the seamarc entered by alternate needle punctures in the line of stitching at this side of the seam. v
An ornamental barrinnthread 7, as shown in rig. 2, is nia non die une of stitching 2, passing from one si e thereof to the other, and underneath the. threads joinin consecutive stitches. The barring three 8,' is laid along the line of stitching 3, in a vInan-` ner similar to the barring thread 7. Insaid figure, the barring tin-ea s and 8 have the appearance of a waving line extendin in and out across the lineof stitching an' extending around the loops in the ornamental thread 6.
In Fig. 3, I have shown the tension on the ornamental threads 7 and 8 as suilicient so as to hold said threads straight'while the threads between consecutive needle tures in the line of stitching 2, are and therefore, arrange themselves so as to extend in a zigzag direction back and forth across the ornamental thread 7. The threads in the line ofstitching -3 are arranged in a zigzag course similar to the threads in the line of stitching 2.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An ornamental seam for sewed articles, including -a fabric, a plurality of parallel lines of stitching, an ornamental thread formed in a series .of oppositely disposed half twisted loops secured b said yline o stitching to said fabric, an independent side barring threads secured by the lines of stitching to the said fabric.-
2. An ornamental seam for sewed artii cles, including a fabric, a plurality of lines of stitching, an ornamental thread formed in a series of oppositely disposed half twist.- ed loops secured by said lines of stitchi to said fabric, a barring thread extendinur rst on one side and then the .other of the tliread extending'between consecutive needle punctures 1n each row of stitchin and secured by said-lines of stitching to t e fabric.
3. An ornamental seam for sewed artil' cles, including a fabric, two-parallel lines of stitching, nn ornamental thread formed in a series of o site disposed half twist ed loops secure said fabric, a barring thread laid substan- A tially parallel with the line ofstitchng,l the thread extending between consecutive needle punctures lying over said barrin threads, whereby they are secured to the fa ric.
In testimon whereof I alix my signature, in presence 0 two witnesses.
