Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAURA D. LAWHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yellow Pine, in the county of Webster and State of Louisiana, have invented certain neu7 and useful Improvements in Cuspidor- Cleaners, of which the following is a speci-A fication.

My invention relates to improvements in cuspidor cleaners and has for its leading object the provision of an improved device for use in cleaning cuspidors which will enable a person to thoroughly cleanse the interior of the cuspidor in a sanitary manner withoutdanger of infection from the contents of the cuspidor.

The further object of my invention is the provision of an improved cuspidor cleaner which may be readily inserted in a cuspidor or withdrawn therefrom without the necessity of taking hold of the cuspidor.

Another object of my invention is the provision of improved form of eflcient and sanitary cuspidor cleaner which will be so constructed as to facilitate thorough"cleans ing of the cuspidor and absolutely prevent splashing of the cleansing fluid as the interior of the cuspidor is being scrubbed.

Other objects and advantages of my improved cuspidor cleanser will be readily apparent by reference' to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of my claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved cuspidor cleaner. Fig. 2 represents a view of my cleaner in use, the cuspidor being shown in section. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of my invention. Fig. 4 represents an end or bottom plan view of the same with parts in normal position. Fig. 5 represents a similar vview with the parts in expanded or cleaning position as shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the frame portion at the bottom of my device with the cleaning brushes removed.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main tubular handle of my cuspidor cleaner, said handle having rotatably mounted therein the operating rod 2 having the crank handle 3 at its upper end for rotating the rod 2 within the tubular handle 1. The said tubular handle has formed on its lower end the peripheral flange or ring 4 which ext-ends outwardly to fit against the flaring upper end or mouth 5 of the cuspidor 6 to limit the downward movement of the handle and also to close the mouth of the cuspidor to prevent splashing of the cleaning Huid out of the same. The rod 2 has secured to its lower end the upper end of the helical spring 7 which extends downward in the tubular handle and ha's its other end secured to the ring or disk 8. Said ring or disk 8 has pivoted thereto at a plurality of points the levers 9 having pivoted to their lower ends the second set of levers 10 whose lower ends are pivotally secured to the second ring or disk 11 which forms the bottom of my cuspidor cleaner.

Secured to the under face of the ring 11 is the sponge or brush member 12 adapted to clean the bottom of the cuspidor, while secured to the rods 9 and 10 at their joints 13 are the brushes or cleanerpmembers 14 for rubbing and cleaning of the interior of the upwardly curved wall of the cuspidor.v

In the use1F of my improved cuspidor cleaner, I first place the handle 1 with its flange 4 fitting into the mouth of the cuspidor and I then press downward on the crank 3 which shifts the rod 2 downward in the handle 1 and causes the rings and connecting levers to move downward. This downward movement is limited by the engagement of the member 12 with the bottom of the cuspidor, and further ,downward movement of the rod will compress the spring 7, this tending to force the rings 8 and 11 together to bend the jointed levers outward unt-il their brush portions 14 engage the interior of the cuspidor. When the parts are in this position rotation of the crank 3 will whirl the levers and thus the cleaner members 12 and 14 to cause the same to satisfactorily cleanse the interior of the cuspidor.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and use of my im- Droved cuspidor cleaner will be readily un derstood and it will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which will commend itself to all as highly desirable in that by its use a cuspidor may be cleaned without getting the hands against the same and thus without the danger of infection and also without danger of splashing of the cleaning fluid which isprevented by the enlargement at.the lower end of the stationary handle.

I claim:

1. A cuspidor cleaner, comprising a tubular handle, a rod mounted within the handle and having a crank secured to one end and a spring secured to and depending from the other end, an eXpansible frame secured to the lower end of the spring, and cleaners secured to said frame at a plurality of points and adapted to be forced against the interior of a cuspidor by compression of the spring.

A cuspidor cleaner, Comprising a tubular handle having an enlarged lower end, a rod slidable and rotatable within the handie, a spring secured to the lower end of the rod, an eXpansible cleaner frame secured to the lower end of the spring, cleaners carried by the frame, and means for shifting ond ring, a plurality of jointed levers having their ends pivotally secured to the rings for connecting said rings, a cleaner member secured to the under face of the second ring, and additional cleaners secured to the levers at their joints.
