To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR W. PHILO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elmira, in the county of Ghemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Coops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in coops and more especially to such class of devices designated as sectional coops.

In the care of fowls, different coops are advantageously employed for the fowls as their age and size increases. The smaller and younger chicks require less space within the coop than the larger and older chicks and consequently benefit by the added heat to be obtained by crowding the chicks in a comparatively small space.

The object of the present invention is to provide a single construction of coop in which the chicks may be accommodated during the different stages of their natural growth.

This is accomplished by the employment of a base member in combination with a top member which taken together form a coop advantageous for the smaller chicks and of moderate area and height, while a plane section is designed for interposition therebetween to build up the same to be used With the larger chicks.

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings forming part of this ap plication and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sections arranged in their assembled relations. Fig. 2 is a side view of an assemblance of the foundation or base and roof members, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the rectangular base member having a central transverse partition or parting strip 6, and entirely surrounded at its upper edge by a rabbeted shoulder 7 for receiving the corresponding part of a superposed section. Said base is divided by the parting Specification of Letters Patent.

strip or partition into two compartments, and in practice, said base is preferably sunk into the soil a slight distance. One of the compartments has a removable floor 9 suitably supported as by cleats as shown or in any other desirable manner and arranged some distance above the lower edge of the base so as not to interfere with the latter being sunk into the soil. This floored compartment 8 I designate as the nesting com- I partment.

For the accommodation of the smaller chicks there is employed the section 10 which is directly mounted upon said base by the engagement of its lower rabbeted edge 11 as heretofore described. Said section 10, hereinafter designated as the top section, is provided in the front thereof with sliding removable glass panes 12 in a suitable framework 13. A hinged roof 14 suitably pivoted to the rear of said top section completely covers the latter and is adjustably retained in its tilted position by the perforated link member15 secured to the top rail of the sash, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon opposite side strips 16 of said top member there is slidably mounted the frame-work 17 suitably slidable throughout the top opening of said member and a depending curtain 18 may be provided at any part'thereof for aifording a pliable partition to the coop section. Said frame-work has a muslin cover 30 over the nesting portion 8 and a screen 31 at its opposite end. The unit method of the device further consists in the provision of a preferably closed-sided rectangular section 19 suitably rabbeted at its top and bottom edges to coact with the base and top sections between which it is interposed. A parting strip 20 is slidably mounted substantially midway the ends of said section and within grooved guide strips 21, which may be of any desired height.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the end portion of the coop provided with the bottom is employed as the nesting and roosting end thereof, while the other may be termed the scratching-shed portion. It is further evident that suitable roosts 32 and nests (not shown) may be employed in said nesting end, while the soil of the other end portion is preferably broken up or softened.

While the present forms of the invention herein shown are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that changes may be made in minor details and proportions and size of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim 1. In a sectional coop, a rectangular base section having a rabbeted upper edge, a transverse partition dividing said section into two compartment-s, a removable fioor for one of said compartments located intermediate the top and bottom edges of said base section, a top section having a rabbeted lower edge to fit with the rabbeted edge of the base section, a slidable screen in said top section, a depending flexible swinging partition carried by said screen in line with and of a height suflicient to have its lower edge meet with the partition in said base section, and a cover hinged to said top section.

2. In a sectional coop, a base section hav ing a central transverse partition dividing the section into compartments, a removable floor for one of said compartments supported intermediate the upper and lower edges of said base section, an intermediate section having rabbeted upper and lower edges, the latter of which fits with a rabbeted upper edge on the base section, a top section having a rabbeted lower edge to fit with either the rabbeted upper edge of the intermediate section or the rabbeted edge of the base section, a hinged cover carried by said top section, a removable partition carried by said intermediate section and of less height than the walls of the section, a slidable screen carried by the top section, and a swinging flexible partition carried by the screen, said partitions of the base section, the intermediate section and the top section being disposed in vertical alinement to form a continuous partition from the base to the top of said coop.
