Description

E. M. APPLEBAUGH.
I BRAKE HEAD.
APPLICATION I'ILED' APR. 8, 1911.
Patented Jan 2, 1912.
3mm I E'zi ezaeMdipW EUGENE MORGAN APPLEBAUGH, OF DANVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRAKE-HEAD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE M. APPLE- BAUGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Montour and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brake heads, the object of the invention being to provide improved means for locking the brake hanger in the brake head, which prevents any disconnection of the head from the hanger, even though the brake shoe and its key be lost.
Many accidents have been caused by the separation of the brake head from the brake hanger, and this separation has been due in many cases to the brake shoe wearing to a thin fragile sheet, which breaks, and when the key falls out, the brake head falls away from the hanger and the brake beam falls down onto the track.
To provide a safety means which will prevent this separation of the head from the hanger, my invention was devised, and will be hereinafter described in detail.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in vertical section. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary View in section at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. 4:, is a perspective view of my improved looking pin.
1, represents a brake head of the ordinary construction provided with registering openings 2 for the reception of the ordinary brake shoe locking key 3, which serves to lock the ordinary shoe 4 in the head. In other words, my improvements are adapted for use in connection with any ordinary form of brake head and brake shoe.
The head 1 is provided with the ordinary hanger receiving recess 5, and 6 represents an ordinary form of hanger which is pivotally connected to the car, and is of U- shape, the lower connecting member of which constitutes a journal which is located in the recess 5. In order to lock the Specification of Letters Patent.

hanger and head together independent of any other means, Iprovide a locking pin 7. This locking pin is adapted to be projected through an opening 8 in the head, and extends across in front of the hanger 6 and into a socket 9 in the head in the lower wall of recess 5.
Pin 7 is made with a key 10 on its upper end, which is adapted to be moved below a lug 11 on the head. As a matter of fact, the upper surface of the head adjacent this lug 11 is beveled or inclined as shown at 12, so that the key will move by gravity down the incline and under the lug. When in its locking position, it cannot by ordinary Vibration be dislodged from its locking position, and must therefore be turned far enough to move the key 10 frombelow the lug 11 before the pin can be withdrawn. I provide two of these sets of openings and sockets, one at each side of the central web 13 of the head, so that the head may be used at either side of the car, and the locking pin located at the outside in convenient reach. It will therefore be noted that when the hanger and the head are connected by positioning the hanger in the recess 5, pin 7 may be positioned in its opening 8, and socket 9, and turned so that it moves down the incline 12 under the lug 11, when the head and hanger will be effectually coupled. and securely held regardless of the shoe and its locking key. Hence, in the event of careless inspection, and the breaking and losing of the brake shoe, no danger can be caused by reason of falling brake beam, because the beam will be effectually held in its normal position by the hanger.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a brake head having a hanger receiving recess therein, an opening in one wall of said recess and a socket in the other wall of said recess, a locking pin positioned in said opening and socket, and across the recess, a lug on the head over the opening and a key on the pin constructed to be moved under the lug, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a brake head having a hanger receiving recess therein, a locking pin, an opening in one Wall of said recess, and a socket in the other Wall of said recess to receive said pin and position the same across the open end of said recess, said head having an inclined upper surface, a lug on said head projecting over said inclined surface, and a key on said pin adapted to move down said inclined surface and under said lug, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
EUGENE MORGAN APPLEBAUGH,
Vitnesses:
K. E. MARKS, PAULINE F. F ARNSWORTH.
