CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,171, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed December 14, 18H6. Serial No. 521,505. (No model.)
Beit known that l, THOMAS L. MOKEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Coup-V lings; and I do hereby declare th'at the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which` will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thisv specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the drawhead of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is asimilar view of a draw-head which is not provided with the link-controlling mechanism. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the draw-head shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing one of the link-controlling cams broken off and removed; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the drawfhead, showing the upper portion and one side of the drawhead broken away and removed, illustrating the position of the gravitating latch andof the link-controlling cam-plates and the lockingblock.

My invention has relation to that class of pin-and-link couplings for railway cars in. which the pin may be supported in its raised position by a gravitating latch; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a coupling, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the draw-head, which is exteriorly constructed similar to the draw-heads usually employed, and which may be attached to the body of the carin the usual manner; and this draw-.head is formed with the usual recess, 2, having the registering perforations 3 in its top and bottom for the passage of the pin. These pel-forations are preferably formed with a groove, 4, in their forward side, ex-
. tending from the lower end of the perforation in the bottom to near the upper end ofthe upper perforation, and a removable stud, 5, is inserted into the pin 6 in the forward side of theI saine, and near its lower end, sliding in the bottoms of these recesses are formed with perforations or channels 8, which admit of any water or dirt which may accumulate in the recesses passing out through the channels.
' Two cams, 9, ofa construction similar to the link-controlling cams shown and described in the specication of Letters Patent N o. 342,703, granted to me and J. W. Gaumer on the 25th day of May, 1886, rest in the recesses and are secured with the polygonal or irregular perforations l0 in their rear upper corners upon the similarly-shaped shaft 11, which rocks in bearings or perforations 12 in the sides of the draw-head.
The recess of the draw-head is continued-at its rear side in a narrower recess, 13, formed with' an upwardextension, 14, having a cylindrical upper side, forming a lip, 15, between it and the upper pin-perforation, and formed witha wedge-shaped extension, 1G, atitslower end, extending below the bottom of the forward recess in the draw-head. The wedgeshaped extension of the recess has a channel, 17, extending through the bottom of the drawhead for the passage of water or dirt accumulating within the recess, and a recess, 18, is formed between the lower perforation for the pin and the wedge-shaped recess-extension, the said recess forming a higher lip, 19, between the pin-perforation and its forward end,
and a lower lip, 20, between the wedge-shaped v ing a iiat forward face, the side 25 of the upper portion of the block between the two lips being formed as a cylinder-segment. This gravitating block fits in the recess in such a manner' that it may rock upon the lower end ofthe wedge-shaped portion, and when allowed to fall forward the fiat face of `the upwardly- IOO projecting lip will bear against the innerside ofthe lip between the upper perforation for the pin and the upper extension of the recess, while the forwardly-projecting lip will support the pin upon its flat upper face when the pin has been raised above it.
The block is confined within the recess by means of a locking-block, 26, fitting in the small recess in the bottom of the draw-head, the said block having a shoulder, 27, bearing against the upper end of the low lip between the small recess and the wedgeshaped extension, and when the draw-head is provided with the link-controlling cams the lockingbloek is held in place by means of the rocking shaft, which passes through a perforation or recess, 2S, in the forward end of the block, while the block may be secured with a bolt or pin, 29, passing into a perforation, 30, in the bottom of the recess, if the draw-head is A not provided with the link-controlling device,
as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will thus be seen that the gravitating block may rst be inserted, whereupon the locking-block may be put in place, locking the gravitating block in the recess, and whenever the pin is raised wit-h its lower end above the lower end of the upper perforation the upper end of the block will fall forward, bringing the forwardlyprojecting lip to engage under the end of the pin, supporting the same.
As now a link, 31, is forced into the drawhead, either by hand or by another coupling, the inner end of the link will force the gravitatingblock backward and upward, withdrawing its lip from the pin and allowing the pin to drop into the link, the block resting in the inner portions ofthe recess.
It will be seen by reference to the sectional views of' the drawings that the lip of the gravitating block will be raised upward during the first portion of the motion caused by the link being inserted, the lip thus raising the pin until the link has arrived sufficiently far into the recess to admit of the pin dropping into the aperture of the link, thus rendering it impossible for the link to release the pin before it is sufficiently far into the draw-head to be engaged by the pin, and preventing a shock of the cars from releasing the pin.
The pin and the link-controlling apparatus may either be operated by means of the same rocking shaft as was shown and described in the patent above referred to, or the link-controlling device may have its own operating device and the pin may be raised by its own separate device; and it will also be seen that the pin-supporting block may be used in a drawhead having no link-controlling device as well as in a draw-head having the link-controlling device, the plain draw-head without the device being shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
I-Iavin g thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. In a car-coupler, the combination of a draw-head the pin-hole of which is provided with a groove in its front side, extending from the lower end of the hole to near its top, apln having a removable stud in its lower end, and a gravity-pin-snpporting block adapted to be operated by the link of the opposite ear.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination of a draw-head the opening into which is enlarged at its rear end, a recess in the bottom of said enlargement, a locking-block in said recess, a gravitypin-supporting block in the enlargement of the opening-recess, and a pin.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination of a draw-head the opening into which is enlarged at its rear portion, a recess in the bottom of said enlargement, a lockingbloek in said recess, the forward portion of which is provided with a longitudinal notch or recess, a rocking shaft through said notch, a gravity-pin-supporting block, and a pin.
4. In a car-coupler, the combination of a draw-head the opening into whiehis enlarged in its rear portion, a recess in the bottom of said enlargement forming two shoulders, the front one of which is higher than the lrear one, a locking-block in said recess having a shoulder at its rear end adapted to rest upon the shorter of said shoulders formed by said recess, and means, substantially as described, for securing said block in place, a gravity-pinsupporting block, and a pin.
5. In a ear coupler, the combination of a draw-head the opening into which is enlarged at its rear end, a wedge-shaped recess at the bottoni ofsaid enlargement, a gravity-pin-supporting block, thelower end of which is bent at right angles to the upper portion and wedge-shaped, and the upper portion of which is provided with two projections, the upper face of the lower one of which stands in a horizontal plane when supporting the pin, and a piu.
