Description
A. W. SOHOEB.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 488,907. Patented Dec. 27, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT w. SGHOEB, or sARA'rooA, KANsAs.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $88,907, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed August 27, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. SOHOEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saratoga, in the county of Pratt and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in car couplers and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and definitely pointed out in the claim.
The aim and purpose of this invention is the provision in car couplers of means by which the link is held firmly in position when the cars are united and when the cars are separated of means by which the pin will be prevented from falling or nitsplacement in the drawhead, and also uniting simplicity and cheapness of construction. These objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which.
Figure l is an end view of a car showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the drawhead, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the tumbler.
A represents the drawhead, having the chamber B arranged centrally therein, and at its lower end the lip B formed integral therewith.
In the chamber B is a wedge shape tum bler C. The tumbler C is pivoted at its base eccentrically and is provided with an elongated slot D through which the pin cl passes so as to allow an upward and downward move ment when the coupling is used with cars of different height. At the top of the tumbler from its center to its rear portion is an inclined groove E so arranged as to hold the pin F when the car is uncoupled. The face of the tumbler is bifurcated as at G and is provided with a shoulder H and depression H. on
which the link rests, so that the sameis held Serial No. 444.497. (N0 model.)
horizontally before coupling. The tumbler O as before described is wedge shape and being pivoted eccentrically at its base will normally fall forward and rest upon the forward walls of the chamber B of the drawhead A.
I is the link of the adjoining car so arranged that when the cars are coupled it will bear against the tumbler O.
The operation of my device is as follows. \Vhen the car is to be coupled the link I of the adjoining car will be forced against the tumbler G and will push it back thereby allowing the pin to fall into thelink. The link will rest in the depression H, and the face of the tumbler being bifurcated as plainly shown in Fig. 3 allows the tumbler to fall forward so that the shoulder II of the tumbler rests upon the link and thereby holds it firmly in position. When the car is to be uncoupled the pin F is withdrawn by means of the cord J attached to the top of the car or by the levers J or by other suitable means, the tumbler will fall forward and the pin will rest upon the top portion of the tumbler and by means of the groove E and aperture E in the drawhead the pin will be prevented from accidental misplacement and will be in a position when the cars are to be coupled, the link will force the tumblerback releasing the pin from the top thereof which will fall into the link, thus automatically coupling the cars.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a car coupler, the combination with the drawhead a lip on the drawhead a chamber in the drawhead, a tumbler pivoted eccentrically within the chamber, a bifurcated front face on the tumbler having the shoulder H and depression II and an inclined groove E at the top of the tumbler, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT SGHOEB.
Vitnesses:
WM. BARRETT, J. F. KING.
