Description

tllttlllllllr @Trillllli FFQE;
ALONZO VJILLIAMS, F TAET, KLAHM.
HEAD LGHT-ADJ anni.
Application filed July 22, 1911.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that l, ALONZO S. lViLLiaiis, a eitizen of the United States, residing` at Taft. in the county et Muskogee and State ot Oklahoma, have invented. new and useful improvements in lleadliglit-djlisters, ot which the tollmving` a speeitieation.
'lhe general object ot the invention is to enable the operator ot' a traetion derice, such as a locomotive, to retient. the light on the track or to` one side thereotl as when the locomotive is rounding a. curve.
@ther objects will appea a` d" he better understood from the following description laken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which7 Figure 1 is a diagrammatic View oli the invention. Fig. 2 is a. lvertieal cross section A taken through the table support and lower portion of the headlight. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section ot one ot the o if'linders. Fig. l is a detail trent elevation of one of the cylinder supports. Fig'. :7 is a detail see*- tional plan el the valve.. Fig. (3 is a detail section ot the headlight and table also showing the locking connection between the parts.
The headlight.- 5 is supported Vfor rotation on a disk (S adapted tolle connected in an)Y preferred manner with the headlight 5 sui-l2. as by pins 7 which enter openings in the hase of the headlight. The dis-l( (l is let into aI depression 8 in the upper tare oit the rigid table t) which may be connected in any preferred manner to the locomotive or ear as the-case may he so as to be supported horizontally. The shaft 11 carried by the disk 5 has a bearing in the tahle S)- and earries a toothed wheel 12 whieh is oscillated hy the rack portions 13 ot the piston rods 1l extending through cylinders i 15 which7 when the device is applied to the locomo-v tive, are arranged on the opposite sides ot the boiler thereof. The cylinders l5 extend through U-shaped extensions 1G in brackets 17 which, when the device is employed with a locomotive, are arranged on oppo-A site sides ot the boiler thereotl and tor adjustably securingthe cylinders to the hracle ets or Ltruing them whenever required to insure proper sliding of the rods 14, l may employ any preferred means such as screws 18 screwed into the opposite sidesjot the extensions 1G and engaging with the cylinders 15.- The pistons 19 are normally Specification of Letters Patent.
VPatented Dee. 26, 151ML Serial No. 639,304.
at the intermediate portions of the cylinders 15 and vieldingly held by thrust springs 20.
Any motive, fluid such as air may be used for reeipri'imiting the pistons and, in the present instance a line made up of two con- 6| ducting pipes Q1. and 22 connected at one end to the casing Q3 ot a two-way valve 24, the handle ot which is designated at llaeh conducting pipe is connected to the cylinders 15 by extensions 26' and 27 which 65 eonnectwith opposite end portions of the cylinders or beyond the opposite ends of the pistons 15). A. locking connection between thedieadlight 5 and the table 9 may be ef* tected in any preferred 'manner such as by 70 tapered rolls Q8 extending upwardly into curved guide slots Q9 in the table and rotating on threaded pins 30 screwed into the hase of the headlight 5.
Then it ydesired to turn the headlight in one direction the handle 25 is turned so as to admit fluid to one of the pipes such as the pipe 21. This will hare the effect of Intwine the pistons and their rods relatively to eaeh other and compressing one of the springs Q0. lll/hen the headlight; has been turned for the required distance the valve is moved to lap7 in which eventthe headlight.- will he held in adjusted position. lVhen the handle is moreel to release, the air llows through the cylinders to the pipe 21 and through the exhaust31 in the casing The headlight then is, turned to its normal position by the action of the colnf pressed spring. It may here be stated that either spring will be sutliciently powerful to restore the parts to' their normal positions but the springs will he unable one to compress the other. T he forward end portions of the rods 1l have hearings in hangers 32 deperuling.;r from the tahle 9. Owing to the fact that the motive fluid acts on both pistons the headlight 5 will-be turnedwithout jerky or intermittent movements'. Vibration of the headlight will also he prevented hy virtue et the lock` connection between the same and the table as effected by the rolls 28.
Although l' have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that l am not to loe limited to the specific structure herein described and claimed nor to the particular arrangement ot the parts since it will be manifest that yal-ions changes will he made in the scope of the appended claim without departing 1"" from tir sgiirit or sacrificing any of the ad,-
vantages theinvention.
W'ha:v I claim -asnew is:
The combinaffon of a headlight having 5 openingsein its base, a fixed table support having guide openings, a rotatable disk let *into the upper face of the table and having ins' arranged in th eadlight a locking connection between the 10 table and headlight including tapered rolls e base openings of the.
i arranged in the guide openings of thetable land connectedto lthe headlight, and means 'for turning the disk in opposite directions.
In testimonyl whereof I in presence of two Witnesses.
