To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownthat LOHARLEs E. CLEVELAND, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Log-Turners, of which-the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the so-called oscillating-cylinder log-turners, illustrated in Patent No. 245,496, granted to William E. Hill, can be readily transformed into practically a stationary-cylinder log-turner, and thereby do away with the objectionable radius-bar P, which oscillates the cylinders to so large extent that it becomes a continual nuisance to keep the steam connections in proper condition; furthermore, to provide a more substantial and improved construction in log-turners than has heretofore been in use.
Heretofore log-turners have consisted of either two oscillating cylinders or two stationary cylinders; but never before to my knowledge has one stationary and one oscillating cylinder been used for imparting the various movements to the tooth-bar.
My invention consists of the tooth-,barand combination of the stationary cylinder and oscillating cylinder, as herein described and claimed, or the equivalents thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a log-turner embodying my improvements. The operating-levers and connections are omitted as not being essential in describing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the slides No. 5, as indicated. Fig. 3 is a view of the connection of the tooth-bar and piston-rod of the stationary cylinder forming a cross-head to work in the above-mentioned slides.
I will no'vs proceed to describe a construction in which I have carried out my invention in a practical way and will then particularly point out in the claims those features which I deem to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. V
In the drawings, 2 represents an ordinary 5o tooth-bar, such as is generally used for the purpose, the lower ends of which are conthe tooth-bar, is made long enough to form a bearing for the rollers 6. The rollers 6 fit loosely into the groove 9 of the slides 5.
Number 14 represents the ordinary floorplate, which is for the purpose of limiting the lateral movement of the tooth-bar.
Both cylinders being provided with the ordinary valves and connections for operating same, it is at once apparent that when pressure is applied to cylinder 3 the top of the tooth-bar will be forced backward and behind the log which is to be forced onto the carriage 1. Now if pressure is applied to cylinder 4 the tooth-bar will be forced upward and at the same time forward, thus forcing the said log onto the carriage. If the log is to be turned or rotated while on the carriage, a vertical movement is required of the tooth-bar, and'this movement is imparted by both cylinders simultaneously.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a log-turner, the combination of a fixed cylinder, and its piston-rod; a pivoted cylinder, and its piston-rod; and a toothed bar directly pivoted to said rods, substantially as described.
2. In a log-turner, the combination of a fixed cylinder, and its piston-rod; a gnidein line with said rod; a pivoted cylinder, and its rod; and a toothed bar the base of which is pivotally connected at its opposite ends directly to said rods, substantially as described.
