Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAUDE HEME, OF BAY -CITY, MICHIGAN.
PIPE-CLAMP FOR OIL-WELLS, sec.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,532, dated February 17, 1880.
Application filed September 2, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE HEME, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Pipe- Glamps for Oil-Wells, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices used for holding pipes while being introduced into or withdrawn from wells.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a I suitable base, which is placed over the mouth of the well, and B the pipe, which extends into the Well through the opening a in the base. Rising from the top of the base are the pins 1), upon which slide the bars 0, each of which latter rests upon an arm, 0, projecting from a shaft, D, journaled transversely through the base A at one end of the opening a, and upon the outer end of this shaft is a lever, E, by means of which the shaft is partially rotated, causing the arms I) to elevate the bars 0, and thus release the pipe, as hereinafter described.
Fivoted between the ends of the bars 0 are the levers F, which carry in their outer ends the rollers F, whichtravel on the face of the base A in the operation of the device, and are merely to lessen the friction at that point.
or semicircular in cross-section, so as to grasp the pipe B inserted between them.
In operation, the pipe is inserted into the wall between the heads G, which firmly grasp it, until, if desired, another length of pipe is added. The lever E, being depressed, causes the heads G to release the pipe, when it can be lowered, this operation being repeated until the necessary length of pipe has been introduced into the well.
This device can be equally as well employed in Withdrawing pipe from the well.
What I claim as my invention is 1. Ina pipe-clamp, the combination, with the base A, of the bars 0, having a vertical movement on or above such base, the levers F, pivoted between such bars and carrying the clamp-heads G on their inner short ends, the outer and longends of such levers bearing upon the base in the vertical movement of the bars, substantially as described and shown.
2. A pipe-clamp consisting of the base A, bars 0, levers F, rollers F, heads G, lever E, shalt D, and arms 0, when constructed and arraged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand this 16th day of July, 1879.
CLAUDE HEME.
