To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residin at New York city, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex"ct description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain-s to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

This invention relates to improvements in pens.

The object of the invention is to provide means for forming wells to retain ink, when the pen is dipped preparatory to writing.

A further object of the invention is to provide the pen with a Well on opposite sides to increase the efiiciency of the pen and to prolong the writing period without frequent dipping of the pen in an ink well.

The invention also relates to improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the body portion, and intersecting the slit is a depression or continuous well 4, stamped in the metal, and adapted to hold ink when the pen is dipped, preparatory to writing. The walls of the well 4, project slightly below the bottom ,body of the pen to afford sufiicient depth to retain the ink, so that the latter will flow freely through the slit.

In the center of the well 4, is.a hollow spherical enlargement which projects up--' wardly, to form a lower ink well 5, the-slit 3 extending through both wells 4 and 5.

-'At the front of the base of the hollow spherical enlargement is.a short transverse slit 6, which intersects the slit 3, whereby to assist the ink in flowing from both wells 4 and 5 to the slit 3.

In use the pen is dipped in ink in the same manner as an ordinary pen.

Fig. 2 is a bottom usual manner, and the ink will flow into the wells 4 and 5, as well as on the upper and lower surfaces of the end of the pen. What I claim is:

1. A pen provided with a raised portion and a depression surrounding the same said depression forming a well, the pen having a slit extending from the point of the pen and intersecting the well.

2. A. pen provided with and a depression surrounding said raised portion to form the base of the raised portion having a transverse slit, the pen being formed with a slit extending from the point of the pen and intersecting the depression and the transverse slit.

3. A pen provided with a well located above the surface of the pen, and a well located below the surface of the pen, said pen having a slit which intersects both wells.

4. A pen provided with a depression forming a well, a hollow projection within the depression to form a second well, said pen having a slit which intersects both wells.

5. A pen provided with a depression forming a well and formed with a slit extending from the point of the pen and intersecting the depression, one wall of the depression having a transverse slit which, intersects the.before mentioned slit, the center of. the well having a bulged portion which is also intersected by the slit.

6. A pen formed with a depression in its upper surface to provide an upper well, a hollow spherical projection in the center of the'depression to form a well in the bottom of the pen, said pen having a slit extending from the point and intersecting the two wells.
