To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SoI-IwEI- zen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVriting-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pens, the object being to provide a writing pen which will write a maximum number of letters without refilling, having to a limited degree the qualities of a fountain pen, while at the same time it is a pen which may be used with an ordinary pen-holder.
The pen more particularly relates to that class of pen which is provided with integral side wings which are .so disposed with relation to the body of the pen as to forma plurality of ink receptacles adapted to contain a suflicient quantity of ink to enable the pen to write an appreciable length of time without refilling with ink by dipping vthe pen into the ink well. 7 l a With the foregoing object in view, my invention consists in a pen having a plurality of integral wings formed beneath the body part of thepen to form a plurality of cells, the lower wings adj acent to the nibs of the pen being formed beneath the said nibs and normally. resting in contact with the inner face of the. nibs at their inner edges, thus forming a cell under each respective nib, the points of the said lower wings being extended well down toward the point of the pen for the purpose of supplying the ink evenly thereto, and to cause the ink to flow gradually along the point of the pen as required in writing. of the pen are supplied with ink as they are gradually exhausted from the respective cells above, until the whole supply is exhausted; the openings separating the cells above those-of the nibs form substantially air chambers between the cells and to a degree tend to relieve the pressure of the fluid within the cells under the nibs and thereby to a certain degree insure an even flow while the entire supply is being exhausted and also have a tendency to prevent the ink from dropping from the pen and blotting.
My invention further consists in certain novelfeatures of construction and combina tions of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims- In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a pen, constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig.- 2 is an elevation of a blank from w'hlch this pen is rolled; Fig. 3 1s a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modified form of pen; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line '55 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 of a still further modification.
A, represents the body of the pen, having the usual concavity throughout its length, it being preferably rounded at one end where it enters the pen-holder and pointed at the other end. It may be made in various shapes and styles. The pointed end 1, has the usual slit 2, and orifice 3, whereby the pen is divided into the nibs H- At the sides and integral therewith are formed the pointed wings 5-5; located above the said Wings 5-5 are a plurality of integral laterally extended wings 66, the said respective wings being separated by the cut-out portion 7. The said wings are formed beneath thesaid concaved body part of the pen to form the parallel cells 8, separated and spacedapart as indicated at 7 the pointed wings 5 being formed beneath the nibs 44:, and normally resting, in contact with the inner edges of the said nibs formed by the slit 2-, thepoints of the said wings being extended well down toward the point 1 of the pen.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified form of pen the respective wings 5 and 6 of which are bent at 9 and transversely extended across the under side of the body part A, to the center thereof, where they are bent upward atright angles from the vertex 10, and thence vertically extended at 11 until they rest normally in contact with the under concaved surface of the said body part; the extended portion 11 of the pointed win s 5 terminate and normall rest in contact with the inner face of the nibs -l4:, at
their inner edges as has already been described in reference to the preferred form.
In Fig. 6, I have shown a still further modified form wherein the wings are transversely bent at 13 and extended across the under side of the body part A to a central point where they meet and terminate in closed contact relationat a point 14, forming a cell 15, on the under side of the said body part.
Slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts herein described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, but;
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A pen of the character described, comprising a concaved body part pointed on one end thereof and having a slit separating the" point into nibs and terminating in an orifice provided in the said body part, a plurality of integral side wings formed into cells beneath the said concaved body part, additional integral pointed side wings, each formed into a cell under each respective nib and normally resting in contact with inner face of the said nibs at their respective inner edges formed by the said slit with the said points on the said wings extended well down and under the point on the said body part, substantially as described.
2. A pen of the character described, com- I the said body part, additional integral poi11ted; side wings similarly formed into cells beneath the under side of the said body part and forward of the cells above described with the points of the last mentioned wings extended well down and under the point (if the said body part, substantially as described.
