Be it known that we, EMERY F. HIoKs and EARL E. HICKS, citizens of the United States, residing at WVhitehall, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in pens, and particularly to a fountain attachment designed for use with the ordinary pen.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing our improved fountain attachment in use with an ordinary pen. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the pen and attachment being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the attachment.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary penholder having the usual retainingbarrel 2 secured in the end thereof and arranged to form a pen-receiving recess 3, entirely surrounded by the same to permit the removable insertion of the nib 4.

5 represents the fountain attachment, comprising a single strip of material having a body portion 6 concavo-oonvex in the crosssection to closely fit the body of the pen-nib L. The forward end of the body 6 is bent downwardly at 7 and forwardly therefrom at 8, being projected upwardly, slightly inclined with relation to the wall 7, as at 9, and terminating in a point 10, slightly above the body 6.

In use the body 6 of the fountain attachment is inserted on the under side of and in contact with the pen-nib, the body, as described, being of such sectional formation as to closely contact throughout with the body of the pen. The point of the free end of the attachment contacts with the under side of the pen adjacent the writing, so that the walls 7, 8, and 9 form a reservoir 11 with the body of the pen. The attachment and pen are held together in the longitudinal recess 3 in the end of the penholder, and the point 10 of the attachment bearing against the pen-body provides a chamber or reservoir to receive ink. In use a single dipping of the pen will fill the reservoir 11 with ink, rendering the pen capable of extended use without redipping.

By forming the body of the attachment concavo-conveX in section it will closely contact and fit the body of the pen proper. We provide for the securing of the attachment and pen as a single article in the holder, dispensing with additional attaching means and prevent accidental displacement of the fountain attachment.

By preference the body 6 of .the.fountain attachment is approximately the length of the pen-nib, and when the two are held together in the longitudinal recess 3 in the holder the point 10 of the attachment being in contact with the under side of the pen-nib will maintain a portion of the body of the attachment spaced upon the pen, as at 12, Fig. 2. This space provides an additional reservoir for ink and would readily discharge its contents into the reservoir proper, as will be evident. To attain this result, however, the point 10 of the fountain attachment must terminate on a plane slightly higher than the body of the attachment, and we contemplate such a construction as within the spirit and scope of our invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a pen of a fountain attachment therefor comprising a body portion conforming in sectional shape to the shape of the pen and bent at one end to pro vide a reservoir, the free end of said bent portion terminating above the body to maintain said body spaced from the pen-body in use.

2. A fountain attachment for pens comprising a body portion concavo-convex in section, bent downwardly at the forward end, then forwardly, and finally upwardly, terminating in a point above the plane of the body portion.
