To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH C. MGMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savanna, in the county of Carroll and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Horse- Collars and Hames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to harness and has particularly to do with horse collars and hames.

It has for its object to provide an improved horse collar having the hames fixedly secured thereto and constructed so that it will be adapted practically for universal use without regard to the sizes and proportions of the various horses to which it might be desired to apply it; also to provide a simple and durable construction capable of effectively sustaining hard usage. I accomplish these objects as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

What I regard as new is set forth in the claims.

which pass through the plates and the leather casing of the pads 6, as shown in Fig. 3. Metal strips 10 are provided inside the pads 6 to receive the inner ends of the bolts 8, said strips extending longitudinally of the pads adjacent to the inner margins of the plates 7, as shown in Fig. 3, for preventing the bolts 8 from pulling out.

11 indicates a neck-piece which connects the upper ends of the pads 6. The neckpiece 11 is provided at each end with a pair of straps 12 which engage buckles 13 carried by straps 14 which are secured to the upper end portions of the plates 7, asshown in Figs. 1 and 2. Thus the vertical dlstance of the neck piece above the pads may be regulated as desired to fit the neck of the horse to which the collar is to be applied.

15 16 indicate hames in the form of tubular rods, which are fixedly secured to the pads 6 by bolts 17, said bolts passing through the hames and through lugs 18 carried by the plates 7, as best shown in Fig. 3. As clearly illustrated, said lugs rise from the surfaces of the plates 7 and are concave on their upper faces to receive the hames, thereby forming chairs in which the hames fit snugly. The bolts 17 not only pass through the lugs 18, but also through the plates 7, as shown in Fig. 5, and are secured by nuts 19 which lie between the plate 7 and the pad to which the plate is secured, as shown in Fig. 5. By this construction the nuts 19 are held in place and cannot easily become accidentally detached.

2021 indicate straps which connect the lower and upper end portions of the hames 1516 and are adjustable to permit the hames to be set a greater or less distance apart to accommodate necks of different sizes. By adjusting the straps 20-21 and the straps 12, it will readily be seen that a wide range of adjustment is provided for so that the collar is adapted for practically universal use.

22 indicates the usual trace connections which are secured to the hames, as shown in Fig. 1.

If desired, the strap 21 may be vertically adjusted with reference to the hames, and for this purpose said strap is secured to the hames by means of loops 23 which embrace the upper portions of the hames and are secured thereto by screws 24 which engage the hames. A number of threaded openings 25 are provided in each hame, as shown in Fig. 2, so that considerable range of ad ustment is provided.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

A combined horse collar and hames, comprising shoulder pads, face-plates secured to said pads, said face-plates having recessed lugs projecting therefrom, hames fitted in said recesses and fixedly secured to said lugs, straps connecting the upper and lower end portions of said hames, and a neck-piece adjustably connected wlth the shoulder-pads.
