Be it known that I, JoHN T. PAUL,
a citizen of the, United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention vis to provide an improved construction of centrifugal pump to the ends of facilitating its manufacture and increasing its efiioiency.
In the accompanying drawlngs, Figure 1 shows my improved pump by a view in front elevation; FigJQis a view in sectionalend-elevation on line 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pump; Fig. 4 is a section is a plan View. showing the'united three sections in which the lower part of the pump is formed; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the three sections of the upper portion of the pump in unasse'mbled relation; Fig. 7 shows, by a view in elevation, the driven shaft of the pump withthe two hollow vane-equipped heads thereon; Fig. 8 is an enlarged section on line 8, Fig-1 or Fig. 4:. and Fig. 9 is a view in side elevation of one of the two similar pu1np-heads, showing the in-t-a-keopening in' one side of the shell.
The pump-shaft 10 carries a belt-pulley 10 or motor, on one-end and betweenits ends, to render my improved device a two phase pump, a pair of similar hollow heads 11 and 12 of w'lib el-like form and of the peculiar constructipn which is most clearly illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9. The head is preferably a casting of brass. It has a relatively-large annular intake-opening 14 in its outer side concentric with its axis and surrounded by an external annular flange 13, and the sides converge slightly, both externally and internally, adjacent to the periphery, .which contains six outlet-openings or ports 15 equidistant apart. The pump casing is formed of; lower and upper sections and each of these sections is composed of three sub-sections. Of these latter, the twooutersub-sections of the lower half of the casing are castings, each comprising a web-reinforced outwardly-extending and laterally tapering shelf-portion 20 having bolted to it the lower part of av provided with a leg '22 terminating in a foot 23' through which to bolt it down upon a suitable supporting bed or base, which is indicated by a line at 24 in Figs. 1, 4 and 8. The casing contains two similar annular central chambers 25 and 26, side by side,
and two end-oha bers27 and 28, with an inletpipe 29 opening into the bottom of the chamber 27, an outlet-pipe. 30 leading from the bottom of the chamber 26,.both pipes extending on one side of the casing, and a pipe 31 crossing the pipe 30 and connecting the bottom of the chamber 27 with that of the chamber 28.
To produce the described casing-structure, endportions 32 and 33 of its lower section are cast with the respective shelfportions 20, and one (that at the left-hand end) includes in the casting a section of the pipe 31. The central portion 3.4: of the lower casing-sectihn is a semi-circular casting formed with the halves of the annular chambers 25 and 26 in its walls, which chambers increase in diameter toward their chamber 25 in Fig. 8; and this casting is suitably flanged externally to inter-fit with correspondingflanges on the end sub-secdischarge-openings,- as represented of the ,flanges 13.

As will be observed, each sub-section and and the corresponding sub-sections of the upper section of the casing.

With the parts of the pump assembled. it is ready to be operated as follows :The shaft being in motion, the liquid to be pumped, as water, entering the device by way of the inlet 29. discharges into the chamber 27, whence it enters the rotating head 11 through its opening 14 and is thrown centrifugally into the casing-chamber 25 through the head-ports 15, under the direction of the vanes 18 and 19. From the chamber 25 the water discharges by way of the connecting-pipe 31 into the chamber 28, 'whenceit enters the head 12 at its opening 14 and is thrown, under the guidance of the vanesin that head, through the ports 15 thereof into the chamber 26, whence it discharges at the outlet 30.
By the described sectional construction of the casing, the manufacture is greatly facilitated and the opposing surfaces of the sections may be conveniently tooled, without laborious and expensive work, to render them accurately inter-fitting. thereby saving leaky-joints requiring packing and frequent repairs; and the course of the liquid through the casing is so curved throughout as'to present the least friction to it and to avoid other impediment tending to impai desirable uniformity to its flow.
The construction of each head 11 and 12 also facilitates and causes uniformity in the flow of the liquid through them. since the curved courses through the head-ports produced by the vanes reduce friction to the minimum besides avoiding impediment to the flow, while the relatively-shorter length of the vanes 19 prevents excessive churning action on the liquid. ll'foreover, as will be seen, the s ccessive vanes so lap each other, toward their outer ends, as to overcome all tendency to radial back-lash of the liquid from the periphery towad the center of the head. by inter-posing the vanes as obstructions to radial back-pressure ofthe liquid from the casing-chambers into the heads.
\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-- 1. In a centrifugal pump. the combination with a shaft. of a casing having its lower part formed of laterally inter-fitting flanged sections and its upper part formed of similar sections accurately seating upon and bolted to the lower sections, the end-sections forming end-chambers with an inlet leading to one of said chambers. and the intermediate sectionmforming a pair of annular chambers, one of said annular chambers having a pipe-connection with the other end-chamber and the other annular chamber havin an outlet. and a pair of wheellike heads on. the shaft, one in each of said annular chambers and each provided with an inlet in its outer side opening to an endchamber, a circumferential series of p ripheral ports, and a. circumferential series of curved vanes each leading to a different port.
2. In a centrifugal pump. the combination with a shaft. of a casing having its lower part formed of laterallyinterfitting flanged sections and its upper part formed of similar sections accurately seating upon and bolted to the lower sections. the end-sections forming end-chambers with an inlet loading to the bottom of one of sa1d chambers, and the intermediate sections forming a pair of annular chambers, one, ofsaid end-chamhers and one of said annularchainbers each having a curved pipe-section elitending from its base, said pipe-sections being connected at their meeting-ends and forming with said connctedchambers a curved course through them, the a other annular chamber having an outlet leading from its base, and a pair of vane-containing hollow heads on the shaft in the annular chambers and provided with circumferential series of peripheral ports to each of which a different.

3. In a centrifugal pump, the combination with a shaft, of a casing having-its lower part formed of laterallydhterfitting flanged sections and its upper part formed of similar sections accurately seating upon and bolted to the lower sections, the end sections forming end-chambers having annular internal collars and provided with an inlet leading to one of said chambers, and the intermediate sections forming a pair-of annular chambers provided with annular internal collars, one of said annular chambers having a pipe-connection with the other end-chamber, and the other annular chamber hLving an outlet, and a pair of vaneequipped hollow port-containing heads on the shaft, one in each of said annular chambers and each provided with annular flanges on its opposite sides surrounded by said collars and an inlet in its outer side opening to an end-chamber.
4. In a centrifugal pump, the combination with a shaft, of a casing formed of laterally interfitting end and intermediate sections, the end-sections forming end-chambers with an inlet leading to one of them, and the intermediate section forming a pair 40 of annular chambers, one of which has a opening'to an end-chamber and on its opposlte side with a radially-curved inner face and an elongated central hearing about the shaft extending part way through the head, and outwardly-flaring sleeves on theshaft in said end-chambers meeting the beads of said bearings.
5. In a centrifugal pump the combination with a shaft, of a casing having-its lower part formed of .two fiang d end-sections each provided with a webbedv shelf portion and-legs and a flanged central section, said sections inter-fitting laterally and being bolted together, andits upper part formed of two flanged end-sections and a flanged central section interfitting laterally and bolted together, said upperpart accurately seating upon and being bolted to said lower part, the end-sections forming end-chambers with an inlet leading to one of said chambers, and the intermediate sections forminga pair of annular chambers having a pipe-connection with the other end-chamber, and the other annular chamher having an outlet, and a pair of Vaneequipped port-containing hollow heads on the shaft, one in each of said annular chambers and provided in their outer sides with inlets opening to said end-chambers.
