MACHINE FOR SKIVING LEATHER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, l/VILLARD T. SHOCK- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Skiving Leather, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a machine for skiving leather and has for its object to provide a machine for beveling the edges of leather straps of different thicknesses.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency, durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

lVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine showing the use of the same; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved roller; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the guide posts.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the frame of the machine to which is rigidly secured a horizontally disposed knife 2 by means of the thumb bolts 3. Mounted in suitable bearings on said frame is a gage roller 1. This roller 4: is provided with a plurality of conical bearing surfaces ..5 arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the center, the apeXes of the cone bearing surfaces of each pair being merged together to form the diametrically reduced port-ions 6 of the roller, said reduced portions being of different diameters. The portion 't' is of smaller diameter than the portion 8, which makes the bearing surface smaller so that heavier straps may be beveled on this side than on the portion 8.

The roller is provided with a plurality of annular grooves 9, having one formed in the center of the roller and one at each end. ed to be disposed in the annular grooves 9 of the roller and the bifurcation 12 engages over the reduced portion of the roller formed by the groove. The extending arm 13 of the guide post is adapted to extend out and rest upon the upper rear edge of the knife 2, which will hold the guide postin an operative position.

The operation of the device will be clearly understood from the following: In drawing the strap through the machineto bevel one edge of the same, it is to be held tightly up against one of the guide posts in order to get the edge of the strap the same thickness all the way. In Fig. 1 I have shown the position occupied by the strap in beveling one edge, in beveling the opposite edge, the strap is again drawn through the machine, but is to be held tightly against the opposite guide post, which is the center post in this instance, so that the other edge of the strap will be beveled the same thickness all the way. It will be understood that the end of the strap is placed between the knife blade and roller and is to be drawn through the machine -by hand.

Thile I have shown and described the preferred construction of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully" carrying my invention into practiceV without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a horizont-ally disposed knife secured therein, a roller horizontally arranged in suitable bearings on said frame, conical bearing' surfaces arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the center of said roller, diametrically reduced portions formed on said roller by the apeXes of the cone bearing surfaces of each pair being nearest together, annular grooves formed in said roller, guide posts having one end disposed in said grooves and the other end adapted to rest on said knife.

2.
