UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK K. BERRY, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIG'NOR TO A. B. STO-VE COMPANY,
OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
GAS-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 5, 1910.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911. Serial No. 542,276.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK K. BERRY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Batt-le Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to gas stoves, and it is the particular object of the invention to utilize the burner used as a broiler or toaster for also heating the top of the stove.
To this end, the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a central section through a portion of the stove; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly broken away.
A is a stove preferably formed of sheet metal having a top B below which is a chamber C used for the broiler and toaster.
D is a gas burner located in the upper portion of the chamber C, and E is the usual adjustable shelf or pan engaging supporting racks F at opposite sides of the chamber.
As has already been stated, it is the object of the invention to utilize the burner D for heating at the top of the stove. To this end, the top B is preferably provided with a removable lid Gr located ,centrally above the burner. There is also provided a shield or slide for protecting the top of the stove from the heat of the burner when the latter is employed for broiling or toasting, which shield is movable to an inoperative position, when the top is to be heated. This shield is preferably in the form of a register slide or damper which in one position of adjustment will cut off all communication between the.
burner and the top of the stove, while in another position apertures are provided through which the flame may pass upward.
4*In detail, H is a partition arranged beneath the top B and above the burner D, the portion of the partition directly over the burner being provided with a plurality of apertures. Positioned upon opposite sides of the partition I-I are a pair of warming plates I having apertures registering with the apertures in the partition.
J is an apertured shield or slide controlling the apertures in the plates I and movable by means of a shank K and handle L to bring the apertures therein into or out of registration with the apertures in the members I.
With the construction described, when the burner D is employed for broiling or toast-ing, the slide is moved to close the apertures in the warming plates, which deflect the flame and heat downward. On the other hand, when the heat is desired at the top of the stove, the slide is adjusted to open the apertures and the lid Gr is removed, which permits the flame from the burner D to pass upward.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a gas or vapor stove, a top, a removable lid for the top, a horizontal partition arranged below and spaced a slight distance from the top having the portion directly beneath the removable lid apertured, a broiler chamber below the horizontal partition, a burner within the broiler chamber positioned in immediate proximity to .and directly be'- neath the apertured portion of the partition, warming plates arranged upon opposite sides of the partition over the apertured portion and having apertures registering with the apertures in the partition, a slide valve mounted upon the warming plate above the partition for controlling the apertures in the latter and the warming plates, and a handle for operating said valve.
2. In a gas or vapor stove, a top, a removable lid for the top, a horizontal partition arranged below and spaced a slight distance from the top having the central portion thereof provided with a plurality of apertures arranged beneath said removable lid the remaining portion of the partition being imperforate, a broiler chamber below the horizontal partition, a burner within the broiler chamber in immediate proximity to and arranged directly beneath the apertured portion, a pair of Warming plates positioned plates and partition, and a handle for aetuif upon opposite sides of the partition and seating said valve.
cured thereto, said Warming plates having` In testimony whereof I ailix my signature a plurality of apertures alining with the in presence of two Witnesses. apertures in the partition, a slide valve FRANK K BERRY mounted upon the Warming plate above the partition having apertured portions adapted litnessesz to be moved alternately into and out of reg- MAUDE BROWNING,
istration with the apertures in the Warming MARGARET M. SoUTHWonTH.
