Be it known that I, JOHN H. VINTON, a l citizen of the United States, residing atl Jamaica Plain, county of Suffolk, State of Massachhsetts, have invented an Improvel ment in \Vrenches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to Wrenches, and particularly to that type of wrench where a movable jaw member is adjusted upon the handle or main member by or through the operation of anut. In many wrenches of this type the nut projects beyond the sides of the wrench body so as to provide a projection which can be readily grasped when wrench. Hence, if the wrench is laid upon a bench or other surface the periphery of the nut engages the surface and if the wrench is moved accidentally or otherwise over the surface the friction of the nut thereon is very likely to turn the nut and thus destroy the adjustmentv of the wrench.
The object of this invention is to provide means for preventing the nut'from becoming accidentally turned when the wrench is laid down upon, or moved over, the surface on which it rests.
The object. of the invention is accomplished by providing one, and preferably two, non-rotatable washer-like guards projecting beyond the periphery of the nut and adjacent the side thereof, which prevents the nut from contacting with the surface upon which it may be laid.
The invention is capable of emph ynient in any wrench wherein the movable jawis operated by a nut projecting beyond the faces of the body portion of the wrench, but in order to illustrate the principle of the invention it is here shown as embodied in a well known type of pipe wrench.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view o a pipe wrench having the said invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a. cross section taken on the line m-w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line y 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the washer-like guards.
The wrench herein shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention comprises a handle member 1 provided with a fixed jaw 2 and 3, is flattened at' its sides and serves as a guide for the shank 5' of the movable jaw member 4 as it is moved longitudinally of the handle portion to adjust the serrated faces 7 and 8 of the jaws. The housing is slotted transversely, and in this slot is mounted the usual nut 9 having threaded engagement with the shank 5 of the n1ov able jaw, 50 that by turning the nut the movable jaw is adjusted longitudinally.
This nut projects well beyond thesides of the housing, and hence if the wrench be laid upon or brought in' contact with abench or other surface, the nut-is liable to be turned by frictional contact-therewith, destroying the adjustment of the Wrench.

The invention having been described,what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a housing, a movable jaw member having a threaded shank sliding longitudinally in said housing, a
nut in threaded engagement: with said shank and held from longitudinal movement on said handle member by, and pro ecting from the sides of,.sa1o houslng, a non-rotatable In the preferred construcwasher-like guard projecting beyond the periphery of the nut and adjacent the side thereof whereby when the wrench is laid upon or brought in contact with a bench or other surface the guard prevents the nut from being turned thereby.
2. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a transversely apertured housing, a movable jaw member having a flattened threaded shank sliding longitudinally in said housing, a nut mounted in the aperture in said housing and projecting at the sides thereof and in threaded engagement with said shank, a washer-like guard apertured to fit the said shank and projecting beyond the periphery of the nut and mounted on the said shank adjacent the side of said nut within the aperture of said housing, whereby when the wrench is laid upon or brought in contact with a bench or other surface the guard prevents the nut from being turned thereby.
3. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a housing, a movable jaw member having a threaded shank sliding longitudinally in said housing, a nut in threaded engagement with said shank and held from longitudinal movement on said handle member by, and projecting from the side of, said housmg, a pair of non-rotatable washer-like guards projecting beyond the periphery of the nut and located adjacent the sides-thereof, whereby when the wrench is laid upon or brought in contact with a bench or other surface the guard prevents the nut from being trrned thereby.
4. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a transversely apertured housing, a movable jaw member having a flattened threaded shank sliding longitudinally in said housing, a nut mounted in the aperture of said housing and projecting at the sides thereof and in threaded engagement with said shank, a pair of washer-like guards apertured to fit the said shank and projecting beyond the periphery of the nut,
each pair apertured adjacent the sides thereof within the aperture of said housing, whereby when the wrench is laid upon or brought in contact with a bench or other surface the guard prevents the nut from being turned thereby.
5. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a transversely apertured housing, a movable jaw member having a threaded shank sliding longitudinally in said housing, a nut in threaded engagement with said shank and located in the aperture of said housing and projecting. be yond the sides thereof, a pair of washer-like guards mounted upon the threaded shank within the aperture of the housing, one at each side of and adjacent to the nut and projecting beyond the periphery of the nut, and means for preventing the rotation of said Washers with respect to the shank, whereby when the wrench is laid'upon or brought in contact with a bench or other surface the guard prevents the nut from being turned thereby.
6. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with a jaw and a housing, a movable jaw member guided by and movable longitudinally with relation to said housing, means to effect adjustment of said movable jaw member, said means including a manually-rotatable member held from axial movement on the handle member and projecting beyond the sides of the housing, and a nonrotatable washer-like guard projecting beyond the periphery of and adjacent said manually-rotatable member, to prevent accidental rotation of said member by contact with a bench or other surface.
