To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. GREEN, a

subject of Roumania, and resident of the city of Oakland, county ofAla-meda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Selling De vices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for stimulating the sale of merchandise, and especially to vending devices which have for their object the distribution of gifts or prizes to purchasers of merchandise; and it has for its object to provide a novel construction of board for containing numbered tokens, wherein the tokens may be concentrated in smaller space than at present, that may be more economically constructed, and in which the tokens may be removed by improved means.

I accomplish my object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing of which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a board embodying my invention, showing part of the frangible covering removed to disclose the construction; Fig. 2, a sectional view taken along the line 64-?) Fig. 1 showing the tokens in place; Eig. 3, a fragmental side elevation showing the diagonal transverse sawcuts.

The same numeral of reference marks the same part in whichever view it may occur.

My invention primarily consists in a board in which are made a plurality of transverse and longitudinal sawcuts, the transverse cuts being made in a direction diagonal to the surface of the board, the longitudinal cuts being made in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the board, all the cuts being made to a depth which leaves a sufficiently strong backing of the substance of the board, and the transverse cut-s being fillecLwith strips, leaving a plurality of longitudinally disposed slits for retaining tokens, and having slanting floors.

It also consists in the novel parts combinations and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawing, 1 is a board having substantially the shape shown. Transversely across said board is a plurality of saw-cuts 2, which are made to a suit-able depth, leaving a sufiiciently strong thickness Specification of Letters Patent.

between their bottoms and the bottom of the board. The said transverse cuts are made in a direction diagonal to the surface of the board as shown in Fig. 3, and the acute angle is made with the portion of the board nearer the head thereof, so that the slant produced by said diagonal cut is downward and outward. A plurality of longitudinal cuts 3 are sawed into said board, their depth being equal to those of the transverse order, and their width a little greater than the token to be used. The longitudinal cuts are made perpendicularly to the surface of the board; and in the transverse cuts strips 1 are inserted. The described construction divides the board into a plurality of chambers 5, having the sloping strips for their floors. Within said chambers are placed tokens 6 of circular form, having diameters equal to or less than the depth of the chambers, and over the surface of the board is pasted a sheet 7 of frangible material, which covers the entire face of the board, conceals the tokens, and retains them in place.

The device is operated by punching holes over any one or more of the tokens, the board being fixed in an upright gosition; and the sloping construction of the floors of the chambers aforesaid cause the tokens to run out of the chambers into the hand. The disposition of the tokens perpendicularly to the surface of the board enables a multitude of them to be concentrated in small space; and the sloping floors make them readily accessible.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, modifications within the scope of the claims being expressly reserved, is:

1. In a vending device a board having a plurality of token retaining chambers formed by longitudinal sawcuts perpendicular to the surface, transverse sawcuts diagonal to the surface, and strips inserted in said transverse sawcuts forming outwardly and downwardly sloping floors for said chambers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a vending device, a board having a plurality of token retaining chambers formed by longitudinal sawcuts perpendicular to the surface, transverse sawcuts diagonal to the surface, strips inserted in said transverse sawcuts forming outwardly and downwardly sloping floors for said chambers, and

a covering of frangible material substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a vending device, a board having a plurality of token retaining chambers formed by longitudinal saWcuts perpendicular to the surface, transverse sawcuts diagonal to the surface, strips inserted in the transverse sawouts forming outwardly and downwardly sloping floors for said chainbers, and variously numbered tokens in said JOSEPH G.
