MAGAZINE-PIPE.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VYLIE S. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Juliette, in the county of Monroe and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes and has for its object the provision of a magazine to be attached to the pipe, the said magazine to contain a quantity of tobacco and having means serving to move a portion of the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing fromthe spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification;-Figiire 1 is a side elevation of a pipe showing my improved device partly in section and applied thereto. Fig. 1" is a detail sectional view. Fig. 2 is a sectional end view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The pipe includes in its construction a bowl designated by the numeral 5, the said bowl being open at its upper and lower ends and extending radially from the lower end portion of the bowl is a stem 6 having an axial bore communicating with the bowl of the pipe.
The device forming part of the subject matter of the present invention comprises a magazine which is secured to the lower side of the stem and lower end of the bowl. The magazine includes a bottom plate designated by the numeral 7 extending from the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.

medial portion of the stem 6 to a point in alinement with the forward side of the bowl 5. Rising from the opposite sides of the bottom plate 7 are side walls 8 and 9, and rising from the opposite ends of the bottom plate 7 are end walls 10 and 11, the sides of said end walls being joined to the adjacent ends of the side walls 8 and 9. The upper edges of the side walls 8 and 9 and also the upper edge of the end wall 11, are secured to the lower side of the stem 6. The side walls 8 and 9 are provided with guideways 8 and 9, located on their upper edges and projecting inwardly thereof. A door or bottom member 12 is movable on the guideways 8 and 9' and is adapted to close the bottom of the bowl 5. The bottom 12 is provided with a pin 13, which when the bottom is in closed position extends beyond the forward side of the bowl, as shown in Fig. 1. A leaf spring is designated by the numeral 14: and has one end secured to the lower end portion of the end wall 10, while its upper end is secured to the rod 18. The normal position of the leaf spring 14: is vertical, and when in normal position the leaf spring is arranged in a vertical groove formed in the end wall 10, the said groove corresponding in depth to the thickness of the spring, so that the latter will be substantially flush with the end wall 10.
Arranged in the magazine and in alinement with the bowl 5 is a plunger 16. The side edges of this plunger bear on the side walls 8 and 9 and the outer edge bears on the end wall 10, and extending vertically in the magazine is a guide rod 17 said guide rod rising from the central portion of the bottom 7 and extending to the lowest side of the stem 6. The guide rod bears on inner edge of the plunger to guide its movements. The plunger 16 is provided with a rod 18 which extends through an opening formed in the bottom 7 and in axial alinement with the bowl 5, the said rod having at one end a terminal knob 19.
By reference now to the drawings it will be seen that a second plunger or carrier is arranged in the magazine and is movable in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the plunger 16. This plunger or carrier is designated by the numeral 20 and is movable in the direction of the length of the magazine having at its lowest side a rod 21 which extends through a longitudinal slot formed in the bottom plate 7 The side wall 8 is provided with a spring'pressed door which seals the door opening in the side plate through which the magazine is filled with tobacco.
When it is desired to fill the bowl 5 the door 12 is withdrawn from its closing position by pulling the handle or post 18 out wardly of the bowl, the horizontally moving plunger 20 is then moved in the magazine to force tobacco on to the plunger plate 16 and when a suflicient quantity of tobacco has been forced onto said plate said plunger plate is elevated by pressing on the terminal knob 19 and the tobacco is forced into the bowl 5 through the opening in the bottom thereof, and the door or bottom 12 is forced inwardly on the guides 8 and 9 to close the bottom of the bowl, the lift spring 14; serving to hold the bottom or door 12 normally in a closed position.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
I claim 1. The combination with a tobacco pipe embodying a bowl open at either end thereof; of a magazine depending from the bowl, a bottom slidingly fitted between the bowl and magazine, and a plunger slidingly fitted in the magazine and located below the bowl and movable in a plane perpendicular to the plane of movement of the bottom.
2. The combination with a tobacco pipe embodying a bowl open at either end thereof; of a magazine depending from the bowl, and a pair of plungers located in the magazine and movable in planes at right angles to each other, for the purposes described.
3. The combination with a tobacco pipe embodying a bowl open at either end thereof; of a magazine depending from the bowl, a bottom slidingly fitted between the bowl and magazine, a plunger located in the magazine and movable toward the bowl and a second plunger located in the magazine and movable in a plane at right angles to the plane of movementof the first-named plunger.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
R. F. GRANT, FRANK B. WILLINGHAM.
