CIGAR-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Application filed July 11, 1910. Serial No. 571,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL STENMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Out: ters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cigar cutters and is embodied in a device especially adapted to be carried about a person as a watch charm.
One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a cutter for use in clipping cigar tips, which has a pivotal cutter blade under tension of a spring adapted to automatically open the blade and a button actuated device for holding the blade in a closed position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations, constructions and arrangements ofparts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved cutter as it would be held on a chain, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, showing the tip receiver, Fig. 3 is a plan View, with the face plate removed, to expose the operating parts, and Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention 1 denotes a casing having an oval flange on which the face plate 2 is secured by means of the screws 8 and A. This face plate is formed with a flared or cone shaped cigar tip receiving cup 5. A cutter blade 6 is pivoted on the screw 3 and is provided with a finger or thumb engaged flange 7, which abuts against the edge of the casing 1. This cutter blade moves in a slot formed in the casing and is formed with a cut-away portion 8 so that said blade can have the proper radial motion in the casing and pass the edge of the opening or slot in which it moves. A spring 3 is mounted on the screw 3 and is secured at one end to a pin 3 and at the other to the blade at 3, so that the blade will be under an opening tension.
In order to hold the blade 6 in a normal closed position a latch arm 9 is pivotally mounted on the screw 4:. This arm is normally pressed against the blade 6 by a spring 11 and engages a shoulder 12 of said blade 6. In order to release the latch arm from its normal latching position a button release 13 is provided, which moves in a box 14, and is provided with a head 15 to engage the end 16 of the latch arm. This head 15 is curved so that it limits the movement of said latch arm.
When it is desired to cut the tip from a cigar the button release 13 is actuated so that the blade 6 will be opened by the spring 3*, when the cigar tip can be inserted in the cup 5 and be passed through the opening 1 in the casing 1. The blade 6 is then pressed inwardly so that the tip will be severed. When the blade reaches its innermost limit it will be automatically latched by the latch arm 9.
Having described my invention I claim 1. In a cigar cutter, a casing, a cutter pivoted thereto, a pivoted latch adapted to hold the cutter in an inoperative position, a spring engaging the cutter adapted to open the same, and a button release for the latch and having a curved head engaging said latch and limiting its movement.
2. A cigar cutter comprising a casing consisting of upper and lower walls, a flat cutter operating between said walls, a spring for throwing said cutter from said walls, a pivoted latch adapted to hold said cutter incased, means for releasing said latch member, an expansion spring for forcing said latch member into engagement with said cutter and an opening in the center of said walls for the admission of a cigar tip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KARL STENMAN.
