This invention relates to new and useful,
improvements in spigots for liquid containing receptacles, and more particularly to that class in which the operating valve is to be normally locked in a closed position, so as to prevent any undesired access to the contents ofthe said receptacle.
`An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character having a valve normally spring pressed in a direction so as to prevent the passage of the liquid from the receptacle to which the spigot is applied, and which is adapted to'be automatically forced in a closed position by the.

Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and cheap .to manufacture `and readily operated.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a portion of a liquid containing receptacle, to which my improved spigot 2 is applied.

A peripheral groove 10 is formed in the outer end of the pitman 8 for the engagement of locking disks 11, mounted upon the inner end ofrotatable stems 12, carrying upon the opposite side of the cap 6 turn buttons 13, each provided with an indicating finger 14, adapted to point to one of a v A substantially L-shaped arm 16 is rig-4 idly secured to the top ofthe spigot 2, ezitending slightly in advance of the cap, and carries fulcrumed upon its outerterminal a lever 17, which lever is connected to the outer extremity of the valve stem 8 in such a manner as to operate the -piston valve 9 longitudinally of the passage 5 upon any swinging movement thereof. The piston 9 is normally pressed in a direction to cover the discharge spout 4 through 4the medium of a tension springl 19, engaging the inner faces of the disks 11 and the adjacent end of the piston valve. The inner movement tof the said piston valve 9 is limited by means of stops 20, located within the faucet. In order to prevent the valve stem from turning, the inner surface of the longitudinal passage 5 of the valve body is channeled, as indicated bythe numeral 21, for the reception of a longitudinal rib 22 formed upon the piston valve 9.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be obvious that when the buttons 13 are turned so that the cams 11 will permit the free movement of the stem or ,pitman'S' through ,sageof the liquid through the said spigot and discharge spout from the receptaclev 1.
This piston 9 will be automatically reseated A again over the discharge nozzle by merely' releasing the lever 14, and manifestly upon Vthe turning of each or any of the buttons 13 the spigot will be again locked in its closed position.
From the foregoing it will be' readily seen secure( by Letters Patent is:
