or by tacking it to the frame which supports the springs, so that it can not be removed except by opening the scams or removing the tacks. A pad is generally arranged on the springs beneath the covering and instead of this pad a mattress has sometimes been thus arranged on the springs. To clean the box spring, or the pad, or the mattress, or to clean the covering, it hasbeen necessary with this construction of box spring to open the scams or to remove the tacks or other devices and this involves c011- sid erable trouble and labor and has generally necessitated sending the box spring bodily to the cleaner or upholsterer.

My invention has for its object to fasten the covering to the frame of the box spring so that it can be readily and quickly removed Whenever desired.

Fig. 5 is an elevation showing the invention embodied with a mattress on the box spring.

Referring to the drawings, 6 designates the frame of a box spring which is usually made-with a shoulder 7 to engage the bedstead. The springs 8 are mounted on the frame and fastened together inany suitable manner. The frame also usually comprises a rim 9 located at the top of the springs to support the pad or mattress and and springs and the manner of fastening the springs together may be varied as desired without affecting my invention. A pad 10 is arranged on the springs and, if desired, this pad may be in the form of an ordinary mattress. The covering 11 is made to fit and cover the pad or mattress and the springs and ordinarily this covering has been fastened to the frame by tacks or to a covering on the frame by sewing.

My invention comprises suitable means of simple character for fastening the lower edge 11 of the covering to the frame so that the covering can be quickly and easily removed and replaced. I prefer to provide fastening means in the form of'ordinary glove fasteners comprising a socket member and a stud member adapted to be yieldingly engaged with each other. In the drawings I have shown socket members 12 on the GOV? ering adapted to engage stud members 13 on the frame but this arrangement of parts may be reversed and other fastening means of similar character maybe substituted therefor, if desired, the only essential requisite being that fastening devices of this character be provided which will permit the covering to be readily removed from the box spring.

Instead of the loose pad 10 which, as before stated, may be in the form of a mattress, I may make the box spring covering answer the purpose of a covering for the top, sides and ends of the mattress as well, as shown in Fig. 5. In this construction the covering 14 for the mattress 15 has depending sides or flaps 16 provided with the members 17 to engage members 18 of spring fastening devices, or other suitable.

fastening devices on the frame 19 of the box spring. In this construction the mattress constitutes the pad but the covering instead of being separable from the mattress is fastened thereto and constitutes a part thereof. 1

Instead of shaping and making the covering complete to fit the pad and springs, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I may make the covering in the form shown. in Figs. 3 and 4 in which the sides 20 and ends 21 are separated from each other. This construction facilitates the removal and replacing of the covering and also enables one side or end thereof to be readily opened without disturbing the other parts, and Without removing the mat- COMPANY, OF PITTS- tress. When the covering shown in Fig. 3 is fastened in place on the box spring it will completely cover and inclose the springs, as will be readily understood.

The usual hand straps 22 may be fastened to the frame at 23 by tacks or other suitable means and to the removable covering at 24 by detachable fastening devices similar to those employed for fastening the covering move thecovering as often as desired to' clean the box spring, to air or renovate the pad or mattress in whatever form it may be,

and to laundry the covering. If the pad is made in the form of a mattress it can be readily removed and a feather bed substituted therfor. It also enables the interposition of a rubber sheet between the pad and the covering in cases of illness or for other purposes. All these things may be done without removing the box spring from the bedstead and this is important because the box spring is comparatively heavy and difiicu'lt to remove and replace. By remov ing the covering access can be had to all parts of the interior of the box spring so that it can be readily cleaned.

What I'claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A box spring comprising aframe, springs mounted thereon, a pad of relatively soft material disposed on said springs, a covering formed independently of the frame and pad and adapted to fit over said frame and pad, the main body portion of the'covering being of substantially the same size as the pad, the sides and ends of the covering depending downwardly from said main body portion and adapted to fit snugly around the sides and ends of the frame, and means for detachably securing the lower edges of the covering to the frame at a plurality of points, whereby the frame, springs and pad are completely covered and concealed;
