Bed' springs made of vertical coils connected together by small helicalsprings have to a large extent displaced the expensive socalled box springs whose only advantage thereover is that they are completely enclosed vin a cover and prevent the entry of lint, threads and the like into the springs, as well as some of the dust that would otherwise ac' cumulate in the springs; the open coiled bed springs being unprotected against the entry of dust and other foreign matter and being d'fiicult to clean when such matter collects l pleted before it is applied to the spring, and

The object of the present invention 1s to produce a simple and novel cover for a bed spring of the vertical spring type, rwhich shall prevent the entry of dust and other foreign matter into the coils at least as effectively as this is done by the covering of a box spring.

When a covering is employed it shouid be made detachableso that it can be removed and washed when soiled. A further object of the present invention is to produce a cover for a bed spring of the vertice-i spring type that may be quickly and easily applied .or removed and which will At snugly, without special effort on the part of the person placing it on a spring, when in position on the spring.

The various featuresv of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter he pointed out with particularity in the claims; but', for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a top lan view of one of my improved covers app ied to a bed spring, only fragments of the spring being shown; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of one end of the cover; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a fragment of the cover in the vicinity of the opening in the latter; and Fi 4 is a plan view, on a small scale, of amodiication.

Referring tothe drawing, l represents a coil bed spring of any usual or suitable construction. My improved cover consists of a fabric box-like structure adapted to it closely upon the spring. When a mattress is placed on the spring it serves as av cover forthe top` of the latter, and my improved device may' therefore be made open on the upper side.

However, for the purpose of holding the device in place on the spring, the top thereof is preferably made in the forni of a border or frame attached to the side and end walls. The device may be made of any desired number ofp'ieces sewed together to form the bottom 2, side walls 3 and end Walls 4. The frame-like top consists of side elements 5 and end elements 6 that will usually be about as wide as the height of the side and end walls.

In order to permit the coyer to be comyet permit it to fit snugly upon the spring when-in place, I divide the cover along a line extending through one of the top frame elements, the adjacent upright wall of the structure, and extending a short distance into the bottom wall. When the cover is for a rectangular spring, I prefer to divide it at one of the ends as shown. When the line of division extends into the end throughv the bottom for ,a distance about equal to the width ofthe top element 6, this end of the cover may be opened far enough to permit the spring to be inserted. Then, when the meeting edges of the .divided members of the cover are drawn together and fastened, the cover will be tted snugly about the frame. Any suitable means may be employed for drawing the meeting edges together and holdingthem, although I prefer to use one of the common types of fastenings consisting of two cooperating rows of interlocking hooks, as indicated at 7 thus permitting what may be termed the mouth of the cover to be quickly opened or closed by the mere drawing of the finger piece 8 along the line of the hooks. I have not shown the details of this particular fastening since they are well known.

It will thus be seen thatI have produced Ia simple cover that may be manufactured so as accurately to 4iit over a spring and to be quickly and easily applied by anyone.

If it is desired completely to enclose the spring, a flap such as indicated at 9 in Fig. 4 may be provided to close the opening in the frame-like top of the cover. This flap may be sewed to one end element of the frame, as indicated at 10, and be detachably fastened to the other end element and to the side elements by snap fasteners 11, or the like.

While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details 'thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.

1. A cover for a coil-bedsprng or a spring cushion or the like comprising a box-like structure of flexible material of a size and shape to lit about the sprin or the like, the top of the box-like structure eing in the form of a frame connected at its edges to the tops of the sides of the box, said structure being divided along ,a line extending transversely of and completely across one of the elements of said frame and down the adjacent side and for a short distance into vthe bottom, and

means for detachably securing together the meeting edges of the structure along the line of division.

2. A cover for a coil-bedspring or a spring cushion or the like comprising a box-like structure of flexible material of a size and shape to fit about the sprin or the like, the top of the box-like structure eing in the form of a frame connected at its edges to the tops of the sides of the box, said structure being divided along aline extending transversely of and completely across one of the elements of said frame and down the adjacent side and for a short distance into the bottom, and means for detachably securing together the meeting edges of the structure along the line of division, a flap for closing theopening in the frame secured to a frame element other than the one that is divided and detachably secured to the other frame elements.
