Description

W/M. PARKER. HOLDER FOR MANIFOLDING ACCOUNT BOOKS.
APPLICATION FILED 001225, 1910.
Pate nted Dec. 5, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER M. PARKER, OF COVINGTON, VIRGINIA.
HOLDER FOR MANIFOLDING ACCOUNT-BOOKS.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, WALTER M. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covington, in the count-y of Alleghany and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Manifolding Account-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of account books used by merchants and others in taking manifold copies of orders, etc., and more particularly to the holders for such books; and it is the object and purpose of my invention to provide improved means for holding the pad sections within the cover which will permit of their being conveniently detached "therefrom.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for readily distinguishing at a glance the account of one customerfrom that of'another.
A still further object is to provide means for calling a clerks attention to any particular account, as for instance the account of a delinquent.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder with manifold pads in position for use. Fig. 2 is plan view partly in section showing the pads removed. Fig. 3 is a section through one of the dowel pins 40. Fig. 4, is a section showing means for attaching the guard plate 25. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the holder with pads removed. Fig. 6 is a detached view of plate 13 and Fig. 7 is similar view of plate 16.
Similar letters of reference refer to simi lar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the holder consists of a single piece of sheet metal bent into such shape as to form a back 2 and oppositely disposed recesses 3 and 4 adapted to accommodate the bound edges 5 and 6 of the two independent leaf sections 5 and 6. The recess 3 is formed by bending the upper end 7 of the metal cover upward and then backward upon itself and the recess 4 is formed by bending the lower edge 8 up wardly and forwardly. A portion of the upper and outer walls 10 and 11 respectively of the recesses 3 and 4 are cut away as at 12, for a purpose hereinafter described. Means for preventing the leaf-sections from becoming accidentally displaced from the pockets is provided consisting of plates 13, 14, 15 and 16, having inwardly projecting hooked ends 13, 14, 15 and 16 respectively adapt- Specification of Letters Patent.

ed toengage beneath the ends of U-shaped metallic binding strips 5 and 6 which bind one end respectively of the pads 5 and 6. The plates 14 and 15 are immovably secured to the outer walls of the re- Patented Dec. 5, 1911.
cesses 3 and 4 in any suitable manner sertion of such pads, the plates are slotted intermediate their ends as at 20 and screw threaded posts 21 and 22 projecting from the walls 10 and 11 pass therethrough. Nuts 23 and 24 lock the plates in any adjusted position. A plate 25 conforming to the form of the outer wall of pocket 4, but spaced therefrom is riveted to said wall and prevents the plate 16 from slipping over the top of post 22 when the nut is detached. A lug 41 on the plate 13 forms a convenient finger hold for manipulating said plate.
26 represents my improved name plate holder which as clearly shown in the drawings consists of a rectangular tubular member 27, having concentric bores 28, and 29 through the upper and lower walls 30 and 31 thereof and bores 32 and 33 adjacent to and on either side of the bore 28. Directly behind the front wall 34 and spaced a slight distance therefrom is a division plate35,
which forms the back'wall of a pocket 36 adapted to hold a name plate 37. The front wall of the holder is cut away at 39 to eX- pose the name plate to view. The entire plate holder is mounted upon the post 21 and short projections 40, the latter of which fit into bores 32 and 33 when the member 26 is clamped tightly to the book holder by means of nut 23. It will readily be seen that by loosening the nut 23 and raising the tubular member 27 sufficiently to clear the projections 40 the entire plate holder may be From the foregoing the operation of my device will be apparent, but may be briefly described as follows. To place the pads with in the holder it is simply necessary to unscrew the nuts 23 and 24 sufliciently to permit of the plates 13 and 16 being slightly withdrawn. The pads are then inserted in the holder, the hooked ends of the plates forced beneath the binding strips of the leaf-pads and the nuts 23 and 2d tightened, the cut away corners of the recesses 3 and 4: clearly presenting the hooked ends of the plates to view to facilitate their insertion beneath the binding strips 5 and 6.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, could be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a pad, the leaves of which are bound together at one end by a metallic binding strip, of a holder for said pad, means carried by said holder engaging etween said leaves and said binding strip to hold said pad in said holder, one of said means being extensible laterally in a straight line with respect to said holder.
2. In an account-book the combination with a metal-back, of an under leaf-pad and an upper leaf-pad, means 011 one end of said back for securing one of said pads thereto and means on the other end of said back for securing the other of said pads thereto;
said means being -extensible to accommodate pads of greater width than said back.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a holder for manifolding account books comprising a metallic back, bent at each end to form a recess to receive a leafpad, hooked plates rigidly secured to opposing corners of said recesses at one side of said back and hooked plates adjustably secured to opposing corners of said recesses at the other side, said hooked plates being adapted to engage said leaf-pads and retain them in said recesses.
4. In an account-book the combination with a metal back, of an upper and a lower leaf-pad, screw threaded posts projecting from each end of said back, a. pair of hooked plates secured to opposite ends of said back and a second pair of hooked plates, said last named plates being slotted to fit on said posts, and nuts screwing on said posts to clamp said slot-ted plates to said back.
5. A holder for manifolding account books, comprising a metallic back bent at each end to form recesses to receive the bound edge of a single leaf-pad, slotted plates for attaching said pads to the ends of the back, posts projecting from the ends of said back passing through the slots in said plates securing said plates to said back, and a name plate holder revolubly mounted on one of said posts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
