To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BELL, a'citizen' of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the-county of King and State of Washing- 5 ton,'have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Combined Washing-Machines and Clothes-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to domestic laundry devices; and its object'is to produce'a combined wash boiler and washlng machine of 1 "inexpensive constructionwhich will prove convenient to use and eflicient inbperation:
With-these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and :combinationof parts, :asjwill' be hereinafter described and claimed. Y p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of an embodi-i ment of my invention; and Fig. 2. is a frag- In .carrymg out the present invention, I provide a wash boiler 5, which is circular and has adetachable cover. 6. Within this -;boiler is :a removable liner 7 formed corrugations whose flutingsare disposed vertically, as illustrated. The lower edge of the liner rests upon the bottom 5? of the boiler while-its upper edge is disposed boiler. Located: interiorly of the liner is a radially corrugated, partitionS which is sup ported upon peripherally disposed legs 9 so asto afford a space 10 between the rim of the partition and the boiler bottom 5. One or more of the'legs are provided with a toe or toes, such as 9,extending into a groove of the liner to prevent any rotary motion'obtaining to the partition. Said partition .is of a conical shape and at the apex thereof is providedwith an opening 11 which serves as a passage for water from the space below the partition. to a chamber12. thereabove and within .a prismoidal'casing 13 which is rigli dly secured to the partition.
he eripheral wall of the casing is fenestrated by punching the same frbm the outside so as to provide. tongues 14 extending in sloping directionsdownwardly. from the upper edge of each ofthe wall apertures 14 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The .ofiice oi these tongues isto directoutwardly water in the ascending travel of the same through the chamber and more particularly fromthe lower rows of apertures. Supplemental to Specification of Letters Patent; Application filed liareh' 30,1911. semlno'. 617,841. f i

PatentedDecl 5, 1911 'adirectrix which is supported from the top wall 13 of saidcasing. formed of a series of-annular spaced shoulders 15 and below each such shoulder is a recess to provide an inverted'conoidal contweenthe successive steps, su'bjacent to the lowest one. Extending axially through the boiler cover as a journal bearing for an upright spindle 17. 'At the upper end of thespjindle 17 is a transversely arranged bar 18 which isemrotates the spindle.
posed arms 19'whose-outer ends are directed downwardly and terminate, knobs 2'0.
put into the water either before or-after the latter bwomes hot. 'Theheat arising thereabove. Upon being heated the body of water I ascends from sald bottom to. be replaced by water flowing inwardly through the space 10 belowthe partition rim. The ascending water is guidedby the partition through-the opening 11 into the chamber 12 wherein it continues to rise subject'to the 'waterfis caused-to move outwardly to encounter thetongues 1 1. These tongues, in turn, cause thewater to pass outwardly ployed -for a handle whereby the-operator At the lower end ofthe spindle is secured a plurality. of radially disdesirably, in

6 and for a distance therebelow is a tube 16 which serves In operation, the boiler is placed ona stove and supplied' wit-h saponified water. The-clothes, according to their character, are
from'thestove acts through the. boiler bottom 5'- to raisethe temperature of the water p the diverging effect performed thereupon by the directrixperipheral surfaces 15' so that,
into the body of water,- inwhich the clothes were deposited, surrounding the casing 13.
The water continues to flowfrom the apertures 14' and by reason of the water returningthrough the opening at 10 below, there is a circulation hestablished having in its 13. -Where but a small batch of cloth is being washed, the water will percolate through the mass to a greater extent than where a large quantity is being operated on.
In the last mentioned state, a ortion of the water will pass downwardly ough the troughs of the liner. 1
During or subsequentto the clothes scaldopcration as above described, the clothes course a central .upward travel. and a reverse movement at the outslde of the casing.
1 I those of the partition 8 whereby the washing is accomplished.
The invention is of extreme simplicity and is peculiarly adapted for family was ings where manyof'the soiled pieces, containing lace for example, are unable to withstand the rough usa escommon to certain varieties of clothes was ers.
What I claim, isa The combination with a wash boiler, of a corrugated liner for the boiler, 'a' radially corrugated conoidal sha ed partltion mounted above the bottom -0 the boiler and provided with an opening at its hi best part, a prismoidal casing secured to t e partition and inclosing a chamber which communicates through said opening with the space below the partition, the wall of said casing being provided with separate annular rows of apertures, a tongue projecting mwardly from the top of each of said apertures, and a solid diatrix suspended from the top of said casing and formed of a series of, super osed inverted conoidal shaped portions, said diatrix extending in the opening in said partition, aconoidal portion being positioned in the same horizontal plane with each row of openings.
