IBLUE-PRINT-PAPEB HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ne 1911.
Application filed January 20, 1911. Serial No. 603,688.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON WITTELS, a citizen of Austria, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blue-Print-Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This'invention relates to holders for blueprint paper, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed to receive a roll of blueprint paper and which is so constructed as to exclude light, dust and dirt from the paper, and from which a predetermined amount of the paper may be withdrawn and detached whenever desired for use without opening the holder and without exposing the paper therein to the light; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im-.
proved blueprint paper holder; Fig. 2 a front view showing the front part of the holder detached and showing a roll of paper mounted therein; Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a perspective view of a detail of the construction; and, Fig. 5 a perspective inside view of one end portion of the holder and showing a modification of the means for supporting the roll of paper therein.
In the practice of my invention, I provide an oblong box or case a which is preferably rectangular in cross section, and comprises a top a a back a a bottom a and ends a The box or case a'is open at the front, and the front edge of the top a is provided with an upwardly directed flange a and the front edges of the ends a are provided with inwardly directed keepers a designed to receive and hold a removable front a which is adapted to be dropped into the keepers a", and the removable front a is provided at the top thereof wit-h a backwardly and downwardly directed lip or flange a which overlaps the flange a, and which supports the front a as will be readily understood, and pivoted to the top a of the box or case at b is a spring hook 72 designed to be turned over and engage the top of the removable front a and hold it in position, or prevent its upward movement.
The front edge of the bottom a of the box or case is provided with a downwardly directed flange 0 to the ends and the back side of which are secured vertically arranged keepers c and the flange 0 is cut out at the bottom edge thereof to form a longitudinal recess 0 which is closed by an oblong vertically movable plate 03 provided with end members 03 which pass J through and are vertically movable in the keepers c and said plate d is provided at its bottom edge with a backwardly directed lip or flange d The removable front a is provided with a 'i 1- downwardly directed extension (1 the vertical width of which below the bottom a of the box or case is approximately the same as the vertical width of the parts a and d,
when said part 03 is in its normal position, as
shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, and the bottom part of the removable front a is provided, in the form' of construction shown, with a horizontal bead member a which gives strength and rigidity to said removable front, the
latter being preferably composed of sheet metal as is all the rest of the box or case a.
Secured centrally of the inner sides of the end portions (1 of the box or case are ear members 6, one of which is shown in is dotted lines in Fig. 3 and both of which are shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and these ear members serve to support a 'rollerf on which the blueprint paper 9 is wound, and the cars e may be constructed in any desired manner, l
but in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown at e the form of said ears that I prefer, said form consisting of a flat 'ver-' tically arranged member 6 the lower end of which is provided with a forwardly and T! the box or case until the end trunnions f of the roller f strike the upright parts e of the ears 6 and then drop the trunnions 6 into the hook members 6 I also employ spring fingers it provided at their upper ends with backwardly directed extensions k which are passed through corresponding keepers 72. secured to the inner side of the top a of the box or case, and the spring fingers h extend downwardly, transversely of the roll of paper, and the lower ends thereof overlap the flange 0 at the front edge of the bottom a of the box or case, as clearly shown at h in Fig. 3, and in practice, the free end 9 of the paper after the roll has been inserted into the box or case is pulled down to the bottom of the vertically movable plate d and the removable front a is placed in position. The bottom portion of the removable front a presses on the lower ends of the spring fingers h, and said spring fingers press on the paper, and if the roll of paper is large enough the said spring fingers will also press thereon, and this holds the roll of paper stationary, as will be readily understood, and whenever it is desired to tear off a piece of paper the vertically movable plate d is moved upwardly by means of a finger or fingers and the end. edge of the paper is grasped between the thumb and fingers and the paper is pulled down to the desired extent and is torn off over the bottom edge of the front a of the box or case as will be readily understood. I also connect with the removable front a of the box or case and centrally thereof a spring operated measuring tape device 2', and the end i of the measuring tape may be drawn out and pulled down at the same time that the end of the paper is pulled out of the box or case, as above described, and the amount of paper so pulled out and torn off may thus be measured as will be readily understood.
The measuring tape device 2' is circular in form and, in practice, I secure to the front a of the box or case a vertically arranged keeper 7' and provide a spring which is inserted thereinto and provided with a circular hook member j into which the tape device 2' is inserted, and said tape device may be detached as may also the spring j whenever desired.
The ends of the box or case are also provided with triangular keepers 7c in which are pivoted as shown at k L-shaped brackets and which may be turned in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. and by means of which the paper holder may be secured to a vertically arranged support, or said L-shaped bracket members 72 may be turned into the position shown in. dotted lines in Fig. 1 in which position the paper holder may be secured to a horizontal suport.
With the herein described construction,
it will be seen that when the paper holder is in use it is completely closed at all points and the light excluded therefrom as is also all dust or dirt, and the vertically movable plate (Z connected with the flange 0 aids in excluding the light from the paper and also facilitates the grasping of the free edge of the paper in the operation of pulling said paper out and tearing it off, and it will be apparent that my improved blueprint paper holder may be made of any desired dimensions.
The construction of the end supports for the box a is not claimed in this case, but is made the subject of a divisional application filed July 10, 1911, Serial No. 637,653.
