Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 278, 1911.
Application filed March 21, 1910. Serial No: 550,716.
Be it known that I, ALFRED BAKKER DUFF, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, vented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, and of which the following is the specification.
Ihis invention relates to gas producers of the type having a water-cooled and waterluted revolving top and water-cooled adjustable pokers, and has for its object to provide an improved combination andarrangement of parts which will insure a .thorough disturbance ofthe top layer of fuel, thus preventing clinkering and caking of the fuel, and insuring complete gasification thereof, the producerl being particularly suitable for ammonia recovery.-.purposes.V
In carrying out` the invention, the firebrick .lined casing and the blower are of usual constructi'on and stationary. The top is water-cooledm'and water-luted and it is carried by a flange depending from its under side and bearing on rollers in the lute, so that rotation-ris. permitted, while the bearings are kept lfreefrom dust or grit. The rotation of th', top is effected through gearing from any ysuitable source of power, while a gastight' joint between the top and casing is obtained by the Hange in the water lute. \Vater-cooled pokers are pivoted at or'near their centers in the top, their lower ends upper parts of the fuel, and their upper ends engage each a nut working on a rotatable screwed spindle, so that the lower ends of the pokers may be moved to and from the sides of the casing, or adjusted in position relative to the sides, while also being carried around with the revolving top; thereby insuring the breaking upof any particular part. of the upper layer of fuel. j
In order that the invention and the manner of performing the same may be properly understood there are hereunto appended a sheet of explanatory A`drawings in which- Figure `1 is a vertical' section of parts of a producer suiiicient to show the improved combination and arrangement, Fig. 2 being As shown in the drawings,
consists of the usual firebrick-lined casing A which is circular and carried on angle-iron.
beamsB extending across the water-lute ash 'trougli C from which the ashes lare with- United States of America,have'1nv drawn and from which extends u blower grate D.` In the center of) the cover or top E of the producer is the usual feed hopper F, and the gas produced passes off by the outlet G. From the under side of the top E there projects an annular flange H;
the lower edge of which runs on rollers J in the bottom of an annular channel K formed around the upper endof the pro` the usual` ducer casing A, and on the channel being illed with water the top is luted, making an effectual gas-tight joint between, the casing and top, While the roller bearings being in the vwater-lute are kept free from d'ust or grit, while the lute itself being beyond the producer wall is not subjected to great heat. On the outer edge of the top E there is a "toothed ring L gearing with a pinion M on a shaft driven through suitable gearing `(not shown) from any suitable source of power, so that on rotation of the shaft the top E is made to revolve on the rollers J, displacement of the top being prevented by guide rollers N. 'v e Pokers P have :formed on them near the center of their length trunnions Q carried inl bearings formed or Xed in the top E, so that the lower ends of the pokers project into the upper layer of the fuel within theA producer, and the upper end of each poker engages in a slot in a nut R on a screwed- ,spindle S carried' in bearings on the upper ends of standards T extending up from brackets U secured to the hopper F. Each spindle S has on it a'wormwheel V gearing with a worm W on the handled spindle X. on turning which the screwed spindles S are rotated, causing the nuts .R to travel thereon, and thus adjust the position of the pokers P. The pokers are preferably Watercooled, the water being supplied thereto through a swivel-jointed pipe Y connected Z with the upper ends of by flexible pipes down within the pokers the pipes dipping in known manner, from the pokers by pipes A*L on tothe upper surface of the top E from which it escapes by pipes B1 into the annular channel .K from which it overflows bya pipe C1. Thus, while the burning of the pokers and top is prevented, a constant depth of lute in the channel K is also insured.
The combination of the novel arrangement forcrockin'g the pokers with the circular movement imparted to them by the rotation of the top insures a thorough .dis-
the w ater overflowing 'pokei's and rotatable screwed spindles on which the nuts Work. i' In testimony whei-eo'f I have signed iny f name to this specification, l two .Subscribing Witnesses. y
