To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES C. MILLER and ANDREW IsLns, citizens of the United v of the producer.
States, and residents of Pittsburgh and Swissvale, respectively, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in. Gas- Producers, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to gas producers and more particularly to that type of producer having a revolving body portion.
An object of this invention is to produce means in the above type of producer by which blasts in addition to the central blast may be directed into the fuel bed at various points around its outer edge or border.
A still further object is to provide in a producer of the above type having a revolving ash pan and rotating body portion, a stationary water-sealed wall or'bustle pipe surrounding the producer between the body portion and ash pan through which wall a number of blasts may be directed soas to reach the outer portion of the fuel bed thereby increasing the output and efliciency of the producer.
A still further object is to provide continuously operating means for automatically removing the clinker which forms along the inner surface of the revolving body portion 3 These, as well, as other objects which willreadilyappear to those skilled in the producer art, we attain by means of the device described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part of this application andthroughout which similar elements are denoted by like characters.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a gas producer embodying this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the producer shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view showing a portion of the mechanism for rotatably supporting the body portion of the producer, Fig. 4 1s an enlargeddetail view .of the clinker grinder,

The producer proper consists of a cylindrical shell or body portion built up in any suitable manner and as shown in thedrawings consists of an outer steel shell 6; and a brick lining 7 supported on an angle 8. The body portlon is provided with a water-seal trough 9 at its top into which a depending annular flange 10 formed on top plate 11 pro ects. The top plate or cap 11, which is statlonary, is supported from the operating floor 12 of the producer house by means of suitable supporting feet 13 formed in any suitable manner.
A grate made up of grids 21 secured together in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone is secured to the outer side of angle 8 and forms a bosh through the perforations of which suitable .blasts of air and steam are directed to the fuel bed located within the producer.
An ash pan 22 built-up in any suitable manner is rotatably supported on a central standard 23 by means of two annular series of balls 24 and 25 which rest upon suitable rages formed therefor on the central standar A central twyer 26 carried by the ash pan is arranged to be supplied with a suitable blast of steam and air by means of a pipe 26 and is ported so as to discharge the blast at the center of the fuel bed. An annular deand 31 seal the joints above and below the revolving grate, and stationary blasts 33 (three being preferably used) have their discharging nozzles 34 projecting through openings formed therefor in stationary bustle pipe .30. r
The underportion of the ash pan 22 its center is provided with a miter gear element 35 which meshes with a miter gear 56 carried on a horizontal shaft 37, which shaft is driven by miter gear 238 from VtlllilCttl drive shaft 20. These gears are so proportioned that the body 6 and the ash pan rotate at the same speed and in the same direction. A stationary ash scoop or scraper 39 which may be adjusted. by means of a hand wheel 40' projects into ash pan and automatically removes ash therefrom as is now common.
Top plate 11 of the producer is provided with a fuel opening ll above which any suitable fuel feeding device may be located. The top plate is also provided with manholes Q and an oscillating stirring armor poker 43 as is now common. T 1e top plate 1]. adjacent one of the manholes l2 is provided with an opening let surrounded by an upwardly extending annular flange a5 and a downwardly extending annular flange d6 and the combined inner bores of these two flanges is preferably. tapered as shown in Fig. 4. Through this tapered bore a clinker grinder e7 extends. The clinker grinder consists of a lower grinding portion as -which lies in close proximity to the inner surface of the revolving body ot the producer and is preferably fluted on its outer surface as shown in Fig. 5 and hexagonal internally. The upper extremity of the lower portion at a9 is preferably cylindrical and fits with a drive or shrink lit into the lower portion of the upper part of the clinker grinder, which upper part is preferably externally tapered as shown in a to correspond to the inner taper of the flanges 45 and 46.
A flange 5O spaced from flange 45 surrounds the same and with flange l5 forms a water trough. Bolted or otherwise secured to the upper part of the clinker grinder is a plate 51 from which'an annular tlange 52 depends, and, extending into the water trough -lormed by flanges 45 and coop erates therewith to form a seal for the clinker grinder. Plate 51 on its under side is provided with a race foran annular series of balls 53 which are supported in a race formed in the upper edge of flange 5U.

t has been found that the capacity of the producer, as well as its eiliciency, is increased by directing the major portion of the air and steam supply into the fuel bed through the stationary blast devices 38 arranged around the producer. The blast directed through central twyer 26 serves as a supplemental blast, and, if desired the central blast may be independently controlled from the outer blasts. All of thewater for the waterseal troughs may, if desired, be supplied through pipe 62, (the pipe leading into the clinker grinder) and from the trough su rounding the clinkero'rinder may overflow into the trough sealing the joint between the top plate and therevolving body and from this flow in series into the two troughs above and below the stationary bustle pipe and :rom there to the ash pan. r p i In accordance with-the provisions of the patent statutes we have described the principle of the operation of our invention, together with the device which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but we desire to have it understood that the device shown is onlyillustrative and that theinvention can be carried out in other ways. 7

In a gas producer, a revolving body portion, a revolving ash pan, stationary blast devices arranged around the producer, a grate carried by the body portion through which said blasts are'directed,.a stationary bustle pipe surrounding the producer adjacent said grate and through which said blast devices discharge, and means for sealing the joints between the bustle pipe and the revolving portions of the producer.

In a gas producer, a revolving body portion, a revolving ash pan, stationary blast devices arranged around the producer, a grate carried by the body portion through which said blasts are directed, a stationary bustle pipe surrounding the producer adjacent said grate and through which said blast devices discharge, and water-seals for the joints between the bustle pipe and the revolving portions of the producer.
