Be it known that I, EMIL NIMPHIUS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of Evanston, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gas producers, and has for its object the "Eig, 1,

Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction, Aas illustrated in the drawings, comprises a stationary combustion chamber 6 of any usual or desired construction. A circular coal receiving platform 7 is arranged in the upper portion of chamber 6, being suspended therein upon brackets 8, as indicated. A coal inlet 9 is arranged in the top of chamber 6 and provided with an inclined feed pipe 10 for feeding coal thereto. A shaft 11 is rotatably mounted in inlet 9, being provided with a gear 12 for driving the same. A scraper blade 13 is secured to the lower end of shaft 11 immediately above platform 7 so as to sweep across said platform as shaft 11 rotates. By this arrangement, it will be observed that, coal may be continuously fed to the combustion chamber 6 without opening the same, and that said coal will be uniformly distributed therein in a pile in which the sides thereof are materially higher than the center, thus distributing the bulk of the coal around the periphery of chamber 6.

A sheet metal casing 14 is arranged below chamber 6 and is provided with supporting rollers 15 upon which an annular supporting platform 16 rotates. The platform 16 supports a frusto-conical grate 17 having air openings 18 therein, said air openings inclining inwardly in a direction opposite to thedirection of rotation of said grate, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. Grate 17 carries a crown gear 19 meshing with a bevel gear 20 on a shaft 21, driven by means of a worm wheel 22, meshing with a worm 23 on shaft 24, drive-n by a pulley 25. An annular water well 26 is arranged about the upper portion of grate 17, being secured thereto, and a depending apron 27 is secured to the bottom of chamber 6 to operate in said well, this arrangement furnishing a water seal between the grate and the combustion chamber. Platform 16 is also provided with a depending apron 28 operating in an annular water well 29 positioned in the bottom of casing 14, thus effecting another water seal for said grate.
An ash discharging hopper 30 is arranged at the bottom of casing 14 and is provided with the usual valve for discharging ashesl therefrom. A circular ash receiving-plat` form 31 is mounted in the upper portion of the hopper 30 upon brackets 32, as indicated, and an air supply pipe 33 is extended through hopper 30 and upwardly centrally through platform 31 to discharge air centrally intothe lower portion of the space inclosed'by grate 17. A conical hood or cowl 34 is arranged over the upper end of pipe 33 to prevent entry of ashes thereinto. A
scraper blade 35 is rotatably mounted on pipe 33 immediately above platform 31 and has its outer end extended beyond the periphery of platform 31 wher@ it is engaged by a depending arm 36 on platform 16.
Ey this arrangement it will be observed, that as grate 17 rotates, the scraper arm 35 will be revolved across the upper face of platform 31, thus e'ecting continuous discharge of ashes therefrom. Another air supply pipe 37 is extended into casing 14 and has its inner end 38 turned tangentially therein for supplying air to casing 14 and hence to grate 17, as will be readily understood. By this arrangement the bulk of the coal'will be caused to pass immediately adwith air and thus good combustion is insured.
The specific arrangement of parts set forth constitutes a simple and elicient one for the purpose.
l/Vhile l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carry# ing my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Iwithout departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A gas producer comprising a combustion chamber; Yand a rotatable grate Coperating therewith, said grate being provided with sides having air passages therethrough extending inwardly at an inclination 0pposite to the direction of rotation, substantially as described.
2. A gas producer comprising a stationary combustion chamber; a rotatable frustoconical grate coperating therewith, said grate being provided with air passages eX- tending inwardly at an inclination opposite to the direction of rotation; means for forcing air through said grate; a stationary ash platform arranged under said grate; and a revolving scraper blade coperating with said platform, substantially as described.
3. A gas producer comprising a stationary combustion chamber; a rotatable frustoconical grate coperating therewith, said grate being provided with air passages eX- tending inwardly at an inclination oppo- .site to the direction of rotation; means for forcing air through said grate; a stationary ash platform arranged under said grate; a revolving scraper blade coperating with said platform; and means for introducing air into the lower central portion of the space inclosed bysaid grate, substantially as described.
