Be it known that I, LUKE Asrrwon'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mooring-Staples, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mooring staples, the invention being particularly designed and adapted for use as an improved mooring staple in connection with the various forms of water crafts such as boats, yachts, etc., the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved device of this class of exceedingly simple, cheap, and eflicient construction, better adapted to its intended purposes than any other device of the same class with which I am acquainted.
lVith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the improved mooring staple. Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3, a side elevation of the improved latch member detached. Fig. 4, a top plan view of the.
same. Fig. 5, a side elevation of a modified form of the improved mooring staple.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved mooring staple comprises a supporting base or plate 1, for securing and supporting the improved staple in proper position, and a pair of stud pins 2, terminating in bifurcated heads 2. As a means for opening and closing the space between the stud pins 2, a latch member 3 is provided, one end of said latch member being pivotally mounted in one of the bifurcations or recesses of one of the stud pins by means of a pivot pin 4, and the other or free end of the latch member being adapted to be se-* cured in the opposite stud pin by means of a securing pin 5, passing through the bifurcated head and through an opening 3*, in the free end of said latch member. As a means for providing for the use of the improved mooring staple in a manner similar to the ordinary staple or cleat, one of the stud pins is provided with a retaining projection 2", and the free end of the latch member provided with a second retaining projection or handle 3, extending opposite to and as a companion of the retaining proj ection 2". hen it is desired to pass a loop or ring over one ofthe stud pins 2, the securing pin 5, may be removed and the free end of the latch member elevated as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, after which it may be closed and secured in its normal position as above indicated. If desired, the latch member 3, may be locked in its closed posi tion by means of extended lugs 6, formed on the bifurcated head adapted to receive and contain the free end of said latch member, said extended lugs being provided with openings (5, adapted to receive a padlock 7, as indicated in Fig. 5, of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
-Having thus described an embodiment of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A mooring staple, comprising a base provided with bifurcated stud pins, one of said stud pins being provided with a pro jection, and a latch member pivotally'mounted in said last mentioned stud pin and having its free end resting in the bifurcations of the opposite stud-pin when in its closed position.
2.- A mooring staple, comprising a. supporting base provided with stud pins one of which is provided with a retaining projection, and a latch member pivotally secured to said last mentioned stud pin and having its free end normally connected to the opposite stud pin and provided with a retaining projection extending opposite to and as a companion of said first mentioned projection.
