Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 2, 1911. Serial No. 641,938.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTEO Ii. DA PEZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Telluride, in the county of San Miguel and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had to the accompanying fore, to that class of cuspidors known and termed as non-spillable cuspidors, which have a valve or like mechanism adapted to close the inlet when the cuspidor is upset, and I aim to construct a cuspidor of this class which will possess advantages in points of efliciency, durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Flgure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing'the position of the ball when the cuspidor is in an upright position, the dotted lines representing the position of the ball when the cuspidor is tilted or upset; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the supporting posts.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the body of the cuspidor, which may be made of any suitable material and of any desired form, though preferably of substantially cylindrical shape, and made intwo sections 2 and 3, which are screw threaded together as shown at 4.
Vertically disposed within said body are the supporting posts 5 and 6, the post 5 being provided with a bearing opening 7 I and the post' 6 is provided with a notched or open bearing 8. Two pivotally mounted concavo-c'onvex members 9 are disposed in said body and are mounted on the inner ends of the horizontal rods 10, said rods having their other ends journaled in a suitable bearing 11 in the sides of the lower section of thebody, said rods being rigidly supported by means of the posts 5 and 6 by having said rods disposed in the bearings 7 and 8; A spherical shaped valve 12 is disposed in the members 9 and adapted to close the opening 13 in the funnel-shaped top 14 of the body. A rubber washer 15 is secured to thelower end of the top and disposed around the opening 13 so as to assure of no leakage when the cuspidor is tilted or upset.
As seen in Fig. 1 the cuspidor is shown in full lines in an upright position and the members 9 and valve 12 are shown in the position they assume when the cuspidor is tilted or upset. It will be noticed that the lower ends of the members 9 are truncated as shown at 16 so that the lower end of the valve 12 projects below the pivot points of said members.
When the cuspidor is tilted or upset the valve 12, which is made of steel, iron or other suit-able material, is heavy enough to force the members 9 open and allow the valve to close the opening 13 so that the contents will be retained in the cuspidor and when the cuspidor is set in an upright position the valve 12 will drop down, the weight of the same closing the members 9. 1
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a sectional body, a funnel shaped top provided with acentrally arranged opening, a rubber washer secured to said top on the under side thereof and disposed around said opening, two concavoconvex members pivotally mounted in said body, and a valve disposed in said members and adapted to close said opening when. the cuspidor is tilted or upset.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a sectional body, a funnel-shaped top, having a centrally arranged opening, a rubber washer secured to said top on the under side thereof and disposed around said opening, two concave-convex members disposed within said body, horizontally disposed rods upon which said members are pivoted, a spherical valve normally disposed within said concavo-convex members and adapted to close the opening in the top of the cuspidor when the cuspidor is tilted or upset.
3. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a sectional body comprising an upper and lower section threaded together, a funnel-shaped top having a centrally arranged opening, a rubber washer secured to said top on the under side'thereof and disposed around said opening, two concavo convex members disposed within said body, horizontally disposed rods upon which said members are pivoted, vertically arranged posts disposed in said body for rigidly supporting said rods, a sphericalshaped valve normally disposed within said concavo convex members and adapted to close the opening in the top of the cuspidor when the euspidor is tilted or upset In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
