exact description of the invention, such as thereon,

will enable others skilled in the art to which it'ap'pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to folding boxes, and particularly to the class of boxes used for carrying clothes or the like, but is not re- Vjacent side edges thereof with lintegral -to enable the same to be conveniently car- Btl ried in the mannerof a suit-case or Satchel. rl`he blank from` which the'box is formed is also capable of being easily and quickly folded to form the same.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, two forms only of the same are illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which,--

Referring to the drawings, A and B designate t-he two sides of the box whichI are connected at their inner edges by a bottom panel C. The side A has the o posite end flaps a, a from the upper ends o which project the tongues c and c respect1vely, which tongues, when the box is folded, are adapted to fold over and close the top of the same. To enable the ends of the tongues c and c to interlock when folded, one has a hooked end d and the other a` receiving slit d. The lower or inner ends of each end flap a, a is provided with a hooked tongue e which, when the blank is folded, engages under the ends of the bottom C and has its hooks inserted Within registering slits f therein.

The side B is formed at the opposite ends i thereof'with the end flaps b andl b which, when the box is folded, are disposed within the end flaps a, a of the oppositebox side, thus providing the box. A hooked tongue g projects from such end of the bottom panel C adjacent-to a double end structure for the inner ends of the flaps b, b', and when the blank is folded the tongues g fold upwardly at the inner lower side portion of the flaps b, b and their hooked ends project outwardly through registering slits la. in such flaps and engage therewith to hold the associated parts folded. The outer ends of the end flaps b, b carry tongues ,41 respectively, which when the blank is folded, extend upwardly a short distance at the top of the'box.

`and when the blank is folded the tongues of of the other one side lap over the tongues side, as indicated in Fig. l, and are retained in such position by the engaging of hooks at the ends of the tongues of one side with registering slits in the tongues of the other side.

Each side A, B carries at theV upper or outer edge thereof intermediate the tongues j an integral handle portion or extension l), which, when the blank is folded stand upwardly and coperate to form a set of handles which may be grasped by the hand to facilitate carrying the box in a man' ner similar to carrying a suit case. In the handles D are cut openings c for the insertion of the fingers and thumb of the hand grasping the same. The openings le are preferably three in number with the center one disposed in a plane below the others to provide a strong hand or linger hold. yIt is found with this form of handle that a heavy load can be carried without liability of tearing the handles.

In folding a box from the blank shown in Fig. 3 the end flaps a, aand b,- b of the sides A ,and B are folded inwardly at right angles to their respective sides along the gaged with the registering slits F therein.

The tongues j of the two sides are then folded over each other and the inwardl projecting tongues z', i of the end flaps b, an engaged with each other as shown. The box as now folded has a top opening therein through which articles may be inserted, or if desired the articles may be inserted before folding and engaging the tongues y'. After placing the articles within the box the tongues c and c are folded over the open top of the box and their ends interlocked to retain the box to closed. The box may now be easily carrled by the handles D the fingers and thumb of one hand being inserted through registering ones of the openin thereof.

In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the sides and bottom A, B and C are the same as those of the form above described, and each of the sides has end liaps Z foldin ly attached thereto. The flaps Z, of the si e B have tongues m projecting from their lower or inner ends which, when the blank isv folded lie under the ends of the bottom C and interlock with registering slits n therein. The outer ends of the iaps l of the side B carry tongues 0,'which, when the blank is folded are intended to lie above the upper ends of the flaps Z of the side A and to have their barbed ends engaged with registering slits 1- in the tongues p. The tongues p are of sufficient length to s n the top of the box lengthwise thereof nd to have their ends interlocked by the engaging of the hooked end of one within the slit s of the other.

In folding the blank shown in Fig. 5 the end flaps Z of the sides are first folded inwardly at right angles to the respective sides, and the sides are then-folded toward each other along their base lines 3, 3 with the end flaps of the side a disposed within. the end flaps ofthe side b. The hooked tongues m are folded under the ends of the bottom C and engaged with the registerindg slits n therein while the tongues o are fol ed over and engaged with the slits r in the tongues P. The tongues 1 can be folded over the o en top of the box and interlocked as mdicated. It is apparent with this construction that when the tongues P are in open position the entire upper end of the box is uncovered to facilitate placing clothes or other. articles within the box.

A I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so farl as such limitations are specified in the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

, 1. A single piece collapsible box of substantially rectangular form having sides, ends and bottom portions, tongues projecting from the upper edges of the side portions adjacent their ends and being capable of interlocking to retain the parts in folded state when the top is open, flaps carried by the ends and coperating to form a top closure for the receptacle, and extensions at the upper edges of the sides intermediate said tongues and having openings to provide handles.

2. A single piece collapsible box comprising opposing sides, a bottom connecting the lower edges of said sides, flaps secured to the ends of the sides and coperating to form the box ends, a portion of said aps having hooks for coperating with the bottom to hold the ends folded, flaps projecting inward from the upper ends of the flaps of' one side, tongues projecting inward from the upper edges of the-sides adjacent their ends and interlocking over said inwardly projecting end flaps to hold the box parts folded, and flaps projecting from the upper ends of the end aps of one of said sides over said interlocking tongues and adapted to interlock to form a top closure for the box, and handle portions extending from the Iupper edges of the sides intermediate said tongues. `In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
