Letters Patent No. 100,921, dated March- 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLES FOR TABLE CUTLERY.
The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and making part; of the same.
To all whom it muy conce/rn.'
Be itlknown that we,J0s1AH H. NICHOLS and WIL- LIAM BOWER, of Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mode of Manufacturing {,lablel Cutlery; and do hereby declare that ,the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in an improved mode of manufacturing alloy handles for table cutlery.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention app'ertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the Aannexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view ot'a knife with alongitudinal vertical section of the handle;
Figure 2 is a side view of the knife completed; and
Figure 3 is a cross-section of theehandle.
A represents the blade of a knife provided with the bolster E and tang B.
Onto the tang B is' cast an alloy handle C, or, rather, part of au alloy handle, said part C being formed hollow by withdrawing a core from the inside when the metal has become Vsufficiently chilled.
The remaining part or endD of the handle, is formed by casting or striking the same up in dies, so as to fit the part C already made, the same to be fastened on by fusing together, soldering, pinning, or other snitable fastenings, so as to form a perfect handle, as shown in fig'. 2.
The cavity in the handle C may be fitted with any desired material before fastening therend D on. This mode of making the handles may be` applied to any kind of table cutlery.
Having thus fully described our invention,-
\Vhat we claim as ne\v,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The knife or fork A, constructed as described, with bolster E, tang B, handle C, and end piece D, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this 13th day of January,
