Description

T. M.v GRILLEY. Pocket-Knife.
No. 233,091. Patentedv Oct. 12,1880.
WITNESSES INVENTOR w %fp @%fg BY M4 ATTORNEY NJEILRS, FNOTO-UTHDGRAPHEFI, WASHINGTON. D C.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. GBILLEY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MITCHELL BENZ, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,091, dated October 12, 1880.
Application filed October 23, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THGMAS M. GRILLEY, of the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Knives, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved pocketknife, in which the upper scale of the handle is removed to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 3 a rear View, of the same, and Fig. 4: a side view of a connecting-rivet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of the cheaper kinds of pocketknives; and it consists, essentially, of setting the rivets which connect the handle-sections, blades, and spring into one section of the handlewhen casting the same, and fastening the opposite ends of the rivets over the other handlesection after the intermediate parts are placed in position. Said handle sections or scales are of frangible cast-iron, and I provide against breaking them in said process of manufacture by anchoring the rivets by means of collars thereon, so that they extend through the scale in which they are cast, and rest on the anvil in the riveting operation, while they present in the finished article the appearance of ordinary rivets.
Referring to the drawings, A represents one scale or section of the handle, and B the other scale or section of the same. Both sections A B are made of cast-iron of suitable design, and arranged to be used with one or more blades at one or both ends. The handle-sections A B are connected by rivets a a, which form the pivots for the blade or blades C, and which are secured to the section A by being placed into the mold of the same, the section being then cast around the rivets and around collars a thereon, the rivets being manufactured of the form shown in Fig. 4, so as to be anchored by the said collars and extend through the casting. The blade or blades are then placed into position on the rivets and the handle-section B placed thereon and secured by forming a head on the projecting ends of the rivets a a. In this operation the rivets rest upon the anvil and relieve the handle-sections from strain. The latter may consequently be of common castiron without danger of loss by breakage.
The spring D, that acts upon the blade or blades, is secured by a pin, 1), which is setinto the handle-section A, though I prefer to secure it by casting the handle-section around it at the same time with the rivets. By securing thus the handle'section by casting it to the said rivets and pin the boring ot' the holes and the fastening of the rivets to one of the handle-sections is obviated, and thus the manufacture of these k nivcs rendered more economical and expeditious, which is the essential feature of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pocket-knife composed of handle sections or scales A B, of frangible cast metal, with a blade or blades, C, and a spring or springs, D, the former united by rivets passing entirely through the scales, having collars a, by which they are anchored in the casting in said scale A, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of two witnesses, this 17th day of October, 1879.
