J. AB. SAWYER, OF'EAST TEMPLETON, lVlASSA'CI- IUSE'ITSl Letters Patent,No. 93,126, dated July 27, 1869.
.The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmaking part of the sanne.
To all whom it may concern:
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal central section on line A B, iig. l; l Figure 5 represents a front view of the cutter shown in iig. 1; and
Figure represents a front'view oi the cutter shown I in tig. 3i
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will describe the improvements more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a rattan-cutter, made many-sided, both on the inside and outside, of a lseries `of tins upon the outside, as will bel hereafter explained.
, In the drawings- I Ais the cutter, the shank B of which is made in the usual form, and having a circular lhole, O, extending through it, and partly'through the cutter part D.
' rIhe hole E in the front part of the cutter, and the outside of the cutter, are bot-h made, inv this instance, six-tide'd, or ofhexagon shape.
' The cutter4v may be made with greater or less number of sides, as preferred, and the many-sided hole E may extend entirely through the shank B.
In iig. 1 it will be noticed that fins or cutting-,spurs a. project out at the corners; and for many reasons it may be advisable -to -make Vthe cutter with such cuttin g-spurs -or fins.
The shank of the cutter is inserted in a supportingfed to or forced `againstthe cutter, also in. the usual manner, but the'form of therattan', as well as the pith which passes through the hole in the cutter, is of different shape from what it is when the rattan is cut by theordinary cutter, which has'simply a round lor circular hole through the cutter.
vThe under or innen sides of the strips, when cut,A
arev of concave or. circular shape, while the pith-is of circular form.
When the stli'ps'are' clit iii this form', there isg'eat liability of cracking or checking the backs of the strips longitudinally, as they are passed through the 'feedrolls, for the purposeI of shaving 'them downto the proper and uniform thickness, owing to the fact that the edges are forcedup, while the back is forced down; and besides, the enamel of the back of the rattan is more or less linjured and broken off during the shavingoperation, when the strips are cut by thecommon cutter.
Then again, the pith being kept in circular form, is not so lnerchantable and valuable as it is when left in the form shown in iig. 6, or many-sided.
It will be noticed that by the use of my'improved cutter, the under sides of the strips are left flat, so that there is no danger of cracking either the enamel or the fibre of the rattan, in the operation of splitting, or in the subsequent operation of preparing it for use.
The pith is employed in the manufacture of a great variety of useful andjornamental articles,4 and the many-sided form is preferred. 1 p n Having described my improved rattan-cutter,
What I claim therein as new and of my invention,.- ,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, witha many-sided A rattan-cutter, of separating-dns or cutting-spurs a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' J. B. SAWYER.
