Be it known that I, HUGH P. MCMILLAN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to improvements in brushes and has particular reference to circular forms of brushes for painting, varnishing and lather purposes.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of brushes of this kind; to make them strong and durable; to securely retain the bristles in place and to protect the lower end of the handle against the action of liquids that will swell the wood and burst the brush at the butt-ends of the bristles.

With these and other objects in View the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,-

Figure 1, shows an elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional detail of the lower end of the handle and the means for securing the handle and bristles together. Fig. 8, is a sectional plan view of the brush,-the section being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a top plan view of the detached metal socket, and Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the same.

In the drawing, 1, designates a handle having a central circular plug, 2, at its lower end; a horizontal annular shoulder, 3, extending laterally from and around the said plug and a tapered exterior wall, 4, extending upwardly from said annular shoulder. The taper of t-he handle is such as to decrease the diameter of the same as it recedes upwardly from the shoulder, 3. The central circular plug, 2, is provided with exterior screw threads, 5, for a purpose presently to be described.

A collar, 6, encircles the lower tapering end of the handle and has a central opening, 7, which'increases in diameter from the upper to the lower side in order that it may snugly fit the handle and the lower surface of the collar is preferably flush with the horizontal shoulder, 3, at the upper end of the plug.

A metal socket member, 8, has a circular central socket, 9, which has interior threads, 10, that form corresponding exterior circuml ferential grooves, l1, and at the upper end said socket member is provided with a circular annular ange, 12, which preferably has a plurality of perforations, 13, therein that are disposed about the central socket. This socket member is screwed onto the circular plug, 2, until its circular flange, 12, seats against the annular shoulder, 3, of the handle and projects beneath the lower side of the collar, 6. Bristles, 14, are disposed about the circular socket and their upper ends are bound together by means of a suitable cement or rubber which oozes into the perforations, 13, in the socket flange and which also fills the circumferential exterior grooves, 11, in the central socket wherein it will set and harden with the result that it forms a union between the socket member and bristles. A suitable ferrule, 15, encircles the upper end of the bunch of bristles; the circular edge of the socket flange and also t-he vertical circumferential wall of the Collar so that nails, 16, may be driven through the upper portion of the ferrule and also through the collar into the handle to retain those parts in rigid relation. A fastening, 17, also extends through the lower portion of the ferrule and the cemented bunch of bristles and also through a perforation, 18, in the central metal socket and through the handle plug whereby to permanently lock those parts together.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

1. A brush comprising a handle having an encircling collar adjacent to but above its lower end and also having a circular metal socket engaging the lower end of the handle below the collar,said socket having an annular flange about its upper open end which extends beneath the collar, bristles around the circular socket, a ferrule having its upper portion encircling the collar and its lower portion encircling the bristles, fastenings extending through the ferrule and collar and entering the handle and a fastening extending through the ferrule, the bunch of bristles, the circular socket and the lower end of the handle.
