To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anna" 1'. Ftsttnn, a citizen of the UnitetLStatt-s, and l'enidittfl at llempstead. in the county of Sassaa and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lm n'orements in Match- Safes, of which the ollowing is a speeilication. such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use t0 the same.
This invention relates to match sales, and the ()llit'('.l' thereof is to provide an iln n'oved de\i e of this claws wlneh is lltltlpttt to be seeurcd to or connected with ,an upright.
16 support and which is particularly designed as safety matches arratnged in packages comprisin" an outer box open at the ends and a sliding box placed therein and one side of 29 which is open.
The invention is fully tllt-tclosed in the following aieeitleation of which the uncontpanyinggt rowing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my ilmn-ovenu-nt are designoted by suitable reference characters in each of the views. and in which Figure l in a la'rspeetive view of my improved match safe and showing the parts in position for use. and Fig. 2 a sectional side 30 view showing the atrts folded together to enable the device to be placed in a box or package for shipment or other purposes, and e bowing; said parts in lotnzitudinal section. and indicating: in tl0ttt' l.lll|t'.-l the position 88 of the parts as shown in Fig. I.
" in the praetiee of my invention I provide an oblong.' box it having; end attaehments u at tlii' b-n-k thereof whereby it may be heeured to'n wall or other upright support and 40 said box is o W" at the. front and preferably open at the ower end. and the. closed head or end 1: thereof is preferably provided eentrally with a lt't't'as u for the purpose hereinal'ter disclosed.
l'ivoted in the bottom oithe box a is; a
burned match holder I; which is adapted to be f lded or to drop down into the position shown in Fig. *2, or to be supported in a horizontal positio: as .--lm\\'I| in Fig. l, and
toe thin last ml'pont' i provide chains or oth r llexible devices 1: which use \et'ut'etl to the aiden of the box at c and adapted to be connected with books 0' with which the opposite sides of the burned match holder are A provided.
Hecut'ed centrally of the back of the box for use in connection with what are known a at d is a plate spring a" the free end of which extends downwardly and the central portion of which is curved forwardly an shown at, d, and pivoted in the opposite sides of the box below the eonnetaion of the a wing 41 at d, and an shown at (1', in an 0 long box-shaped case c the inner end of which is closed and the outer or free end of which is open and preferably cut away at a downward y and outwardly inclined angle as shown at e'- and in the upper end of the top of which is a recess 1:".
My im n-ored match safe in mrtienhtrly adapted or use in connect ion with what are known as safety matches which are usually placed in utchuges consisting of a box f 0 rent at bot tends and which eoutains a napp elnental box I/ open at the top, and in which the matches [1. are placed. In practice. the box f is inserted into the cam-,0. and said case is, provided adjacent to its inner end with a atop i which litnitu the extent to which the box f can be inserted therelnto, said case a being pr -lerably longer than the box I. The case 4: is Ills" provided in its inner end with a stop pin j which limits the extent to which the. supplemental box y can be inserted into the box I, and when the package consisting of the boxes f and r is vInserted into the case n the box f will he entitely within the case a. but the safpplemental b0.\' 1/ will n'ojeet forwardly o said box I an shown in "in. 2 and may be drawn out further an shown in Fitz. l, and still furthe in order to facilitate the removal of the matches 11. for use. I also. in thin eom strut-lion, pivot to the cane c at- 1.: a rod m provided at its free end with a tin 'er "1''" adapted to be passed downwardly tn'ough a eorres mnding aperture in the top of the.
box fund to enter the open top of the box 1 aml to pas-e1 downwardly between theunttehes therein as clearly shown, aint the object of which ls'to prevent the box y from being entirely withdrawn from the box the linger wt engaging the inner end of't It box 1/ in this olnn-ation. The up Ntfillt. sides of the box 0 are also providet with oblong HlolS or o ienings n and the opposite sides of the box with serrated or sanded nurtures. atnl in u'aetiee. the headed end of a match removm from the. box 1/ may be rubbed on said mrtaee or anrfaeea for the purpme of igniting the match.
The burned matches may be delmnited in the receiver 6 when held in the position shown in Fig. l and may be removed therefrom whenever desired, and the case a with the match package, is annually folded in the box a when the latter is secured to a wall or other support and may be let down into a horizontal position when a match in desired and may he again raised when the match is removed and used, and the s n'ing serves to hold said case 0 with tie mckage, of matches in either position as will be readily understood.
When it is desired to inclose the match safe in a package or box for shi )ping purposes, the mrts are folded into t a: position shown in i 2 and a single match safe may be place in a box or package of suitable form and dimensions, or a number of match safes may be thus packed in a box or case. When the case a is folded as shown in Fig. 1, it completely fills the top part of the box a and in order to lower said case into the horizontal position, a tlunnb or finger is inserted into the recess a so that it will bear on the top front edge of the box f, or on the to end of the box g.
Havin fu ly described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A match safe comprising an oblong box 0 -n at the front, a burned match receptace pivoted in the bottom portion of said box and adapted to be held in a horizontal position, a case pivoted in said box above said receptacle and adapted to be folded thereinto and to be held in a horizontal position, a match package adapted to be inserted into said case and comprising a main box open at both ends, and a supplemental box slidably mounted therein and open at the top, means for limiting the extent to which the main box can be inserted into said case, and means for limiting the extent to which the supilemcntal box can be inserted into the main ox.
2. A match safe comprising an oblong box open at the front, a burned match receptacle pivoted in the bottom portion of said box and adapted to be held in a horizontal position, a case pivoted in said box above said receptacle and adapted to be folded thereinto and to be held in a horizontal position. a match package adapted to be inserted into said ease and comprising a main box own at both ends and a supplemental box s idably mounted therein and open at the top,
means for limiting the extent to which the main box can be inserted into said case, and means for limiting the extent to which the supplemental box can, be inserted into the main box, said case bein also provided with means for preventin tlic total withdrawal of the supp cuu-ntul mx from the main box.
3. A match sate comprising an oblong box o en at the front, a burned match receptucla pivoted in the bottom portion thereof, means for holding said burned match receptacle in a horizontal pm-ition, a cane pivoted in said box above said receptacle and adapted to be folded thrrciuto and to be held in a horizontal position, and a match package comprising a main box adapted to be inserted into said case, and a su plemental box open at the top and adapter to be insorted into the main box.
4. A match safe comprising an' oblong box open at the front, a burned match receptacle pivoted in the bottom portion thereof, means for holding said burned match receptacle in a horizontal position, a case )lVtltt'tl in. said box above said receptacle an adapted to be folded thercinto and to be held in a horizontal position, and a match package comprising a main box adapted to be inserted into said case and a su iplcmental box open at the top aml adaptct to be inserted into the main box, said case being also provided with means for limiting the extent to which the main box may be inserted thereinto, and means for limiting the extent to which the supplemental box may be inserted into the nmin box.
5. A match safe comprising an' oblong box open at the front, a burned match receptuclc pivoted in the bottom portion thereof, means for holding said burned match'receptacle in a horizontal position, and a case pivoted in said box above said receptacle and adapted to be folded thereinto, and to be held in a horizontal position, said case being adapted to receive a package of matches.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name in prc:-cnce of the subscribing witnesses this 19th day of September 1911. I
