To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREEN 0. BEASLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Abradant Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to grinding and polishing and has for an object to provide an attachment for machines and adapted for grinding or polishing, the driving power being derived from the machine to which the device is attached.
The invention relates-more particularly to a device for attachment to sewing machines, for grinding and polishing articles, and consists in various improvements over a sewing machine attachment for which United States Letters Patent were granted me June 28, 1910, No. 962,731.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a face plate, an abradant for attachment to the face plate, clamping members and means for connecting the abradant, the face plate and the clamping members, the said means being also adapted to operate the clamping members to assume a clamping position, and more tightly grip the machine to which they are attached.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective View showing a portion of a sewing machine with my device attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my attachment, looking at the same from the rear thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamping members of my device.
Referring more particularly to the views, I employ a circular face plate provided with a central opening 11 and an abradant 12 for attachment to the face plate, the said abradant having a central opening therethrough with a beveled recess 13 in the outer side.

Suitable clamping members 15, for engage- .ment with the face plate 10, are provided is provided with an opening 17 and adjacent the said middle part on both sides thereof each clamping member has inclined portions 18 adapted to engage the face plate 10 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A screw 19 is provided to connect the abradant 12, the face plate 10 and the clamping members 15 with a nut 20 secured to the said screw at the end thereof.
As shown in Fig. 2, when the screw 19 loosely engages the various parts of my device, the clamping members are in unclamping position. Now, when it is desired to attach my device to a machine, as shown in Fig. 1, the clamping flanges 16 are slipped over the knurled wheel 21 of the machine 22, and the screw 19 is then turned to draw the inner middle parts of the clamping members toward the abradant 12. Now, when the screw 19 is turned as mentioned, the inclined sides or portions 18 of the clamping members 16, in engagement with the face plate 10, will force the opposite clamping flanges 16 toward each other and in this manner the device can be securely clamped to the wheel 21 of the machine 23, after which the machine is operated in the usual manner, thus turning the abradant so that tools and the like can be quickly and easily ground or polished thereon.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the screw 19 not only connects the abradant 13, the face plate 10 and the clamping members 15, but it also acts to move the clamping flanges to clamp my attachment to a machine.
It will be noted that the rim of the plate 10 projects beyond the rim of the abradant 12, which may be an emery wheel, or grindstone, or the like. The projecting rim of the plate 10 serves as a guide or rest for the scissors or the other tool to be sharpened, thus making the work of sharpening easy, even for unskilled persons.
It will be understood that although I have described and shown my device as attached to a sewing machine, the same can be as conveniently employed on other machines adapted for producing a rotative movement, and it will be further understood that suitable buffers and polishing means can be used instead of the abradant.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the class described, a
face-plate, an abradant for attachment to the face-plate, clamping members having inclined sides adapted to engage the face-plate and means for removably connecting the said abradant, the said face-plate and the said clamping members, the said clamping members being adapted to assume a clamping position when the said inclined sides are moved to tightly engage the said face-plate by the action of the said means.
2. In a device of the class described, a face-plate, an abradant for attachment to the face-plate, clamping members engaging the face-plate, and means whereby when the said clamping members are moved toward the said abradant, they will assume a clamping position.
3. In a device of the class described, a face-plate, an abradant, for attachment to the face plate, clamping members engaging the face-plate and means for removably connecting the said abradant, the said faceplate and the said clamping members, each of' the clamping members having integral clamping flanges and inclined sides engaging the face-plate so that the clamping flanges will assume a clamping position when the said clamping members are drawn toward the said abradant by the said means.
4. In a grinding and polishing attachment for machines, a face-plate, an abradant for attachment to the face-plate, clamping members for attachment to the driving shaft of the machine and means for removably connecting the said abradant, the said faceplate and the said clamping members, the said means being adjustable relatively to the clamping members to move the said members to become more securely clamped to the said driving shaft.
5. In a device of the class described, a face plate, an abradant for attachment to the face plate, clamping members engaging the face plate, and means passing through said abradant, said face plate and said'clamping members to hold the abradant, the face plate and the clamping members together.
6. In a device of the class described, an abradant, a face plate attached to said abradant and overlapping the edges thereof, clamping members engaging the face plate, and means passing through said abradant, said face plate and said clamping members, for holding the abradant, the face plate and the clamping members together.
7. In a device of the class described, an abradant, a face plate, said abradant and said face plate having alined apertures tlierethrough, clamping members having means at their outer ends for attachment to a driving shaft, and having their middle portions bent to enter the alined openings in said face plate and said abradant, and means passing through the opening in said abradant and engaging the clamping members to hold the face plate, the abradant and the clamping members together.
