IMPROVEMENT IN SHARPENlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming .part of Letters Patent No. 178,370, dated June 6, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. INGER- soLL and HARVEY L. FISHER, of Toledo, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Tool-Holder for Grindstones, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved tool-holder for grindstones; Fig. 2, a top view of the same; Fig. 3, a side view of the tool-holder as used for grinding heavier tools, and Fig. 4 a detail top view of the socket-plate for attaching the tool-holder to the grindstone-frame.

The object of our invention is to furnish an improved tool-holder for grinding cnttingknives, chisels, bits, gouges, axes, and other tools at the exact bevel required, in an easy and accurate manner, the tool-holder being readily adjusted, and of simple, .strong, and durable construction.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, A represents a gage-rod, that is set into the perforated end plate of a strong supporting-arm, B, applied by a socketplate, B, shown in Fig. 4, rigidly to the frame of the grindstone. The socket B is so constructed with a socket-hole and recess, into which corresponding lugs at the end of the supporting-arm are fitted, that the arm is securely locked in position. The gage-rod A is adjusted by means of a sliding collar, A, on the arm B, according to the bevel required by the tool, the collar bein'g clamped by a setscrew to rod 'A, which is moved down until the collar forms contact with the perforated end of arm B. The gage-rod A carries a lateral clamping-frame, G, to the slotted part of which plain bits, chisels, gouges, 850., having projecting ends, may be readily secured by a clamping-screw, a. Clamping-jaws D are pivoted to the pins or bolts b of the clampingframe 0 for exposing cutting-knives, and other long edged-tools, to the action of the grindstone. A detachable handle, E, is clamped by set-screws to frame 0, and serves to hold the tool in the required position to the stone. The pivoted jaws D may be thrown back on frame 0, and a clamp-support, F, shown in Fig. 3, secured to the clamping-frame C, so
that axes and other large tools may be ground with the same facility as cutting-knives, chisels, 860. A spiral spring may be placed on gage-rod A, between the sliding collar A and the end of its supporting-arm B, for grinding tools that do not want a true bevel-such' as chopping-axes. A vibrating motion is in this case imparted by the hand to avoid a true bevel.
With this tool-holding device any cuttingtool may be sharpened at an exact bevel without help, as one hand can turn the stone and the other guide the tool against the same. By rolling the gage-rod gouges may be ground with the same bevel in superior manner. The tool-holder is readily adapted to any size of grinding-stone, and may be quickly attached or removed and placed on either side of the stone, forming an economical, convenient, and time-saving device for grinding all kinds of cutting-tools.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj l. The gage-rod A, adjustable through a perforated bent end of arm B, by a sliding collar, A, and set-screw, as shown and described.
2. The socket-plate B, rigidly attached to grindstone-frame, and provided with recesses to receive lugs on the end of supporting-arm B, as set forth.
3. The frame 0, jaws D, and handle E, 0011- structed and combined with rod A, as and for the purpose specified.
