Description

No Model.) I Q J. BLAKESLEE.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING TOOLS FOR GRINDING.
No. 418,781 K Patented Jan. 7,1890. I
;Gllllllllllllllil uiiiil UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
JARED BLAKESLEE, OF STORY CITY, IOWA.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING TOOLS FOR GRINDING;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,781, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed August 16, 1889.
. the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin devicesfor holding the blades of tools while being sharpened; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed. 3
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view'of my improved device in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are front and rear end views, respectively.
In carrying out my invention I employ the side plates A A, which are secured together and heldat the proper distance apart by the bolts B, as shown. These plates are substantially L-shaped, and between the inner or upper corners of their shorter armsI arrange a roller 0, which is adapted to bear on the grindstone and supportthe device. At the ends of the longer arms of these plates A, I pivot the vibrating'plate D, from the rear end of which a slotted curved arm E extends past a cross-bar F, secured between the side plates, and the thumb-nut G is mounted in-the said cross-bar and passes through the slot of the curved arm E, and is adapted to bind the said curved arm against the cross-bar, so as to secure the pivoted plate D at any desired angle. At the free end of this plate D, on
the inner or lower side of the same, I provide the bail H, in which a thumb-screw I is mounted.
In practice the blade to be sharpened is Serial No. 329,928. (No model.)
inserted through the bail H and the thumbscrew I turned up against the blade, so as to secure it firmly against the pivoted plate. The said plate is then adjusted to the proper angle, according to the bevel which it is desired to give the end of the blade, and the device is then rested on a grindstone, as indicated in Fig. 1. As the grindstone revolves, the end of the blade will .be worn away and thereby sharpened, as Will be readily understood, and the blade will be given a true edge, although the grindstone may be irregular, as the device rests on the grindstone, and will consequently automatically shift its position to correspond with the edge of the stone.
The device is very simple in its construction, and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The improved tool-holder for grindstones, consisting of a frame provided with a crossbar F, a roller journaled in said frame near one end of the same and adapted to bear on the grindstone, the plate pivoted to the other end of the frame and carrying the tool, the longitudinally-slotted curved arm extending from the plate and past the cross-bar F, and the set-screw passing through the slot in said arm and into the cross-bar F, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JARED BLAKESLEE.
