Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7,1911.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Serial No. 612,826.
12) all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Joe DEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in brick tongs arranged particularly for supporting a series of alined, unconnected bodies.
The main object of my invent-ion is to provide a lifter, constructed in such a manner that it can be readily and conveniently applied to a series of brick, and adapted to hold same by engaging only the end brick, and to provide a brick tong which may be adjusted easily to carry different numbers of brick at a time. And the invention is capable of adjustment so that the large handle will need to be raised but a very little above the main frame to make the tongs grasp the brick, thus the handle by which-the brick are carried is near to the load to be lifted. The specific arrangement of the parts of the tongs being constructed so as to insure sufficient pressure against the end bricks, to thereby support the intermediate bricks.
l/Vith this object in View the invention has certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of my invention when open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention when same is closed, and in the position it would be when carrying a series of brick. Fig. 3 is the top plan view, also in section showing portions of the adjustable bars, and a portion of one of the grappling levers.
In the drawings, 1 is the gripping portion of the large handle, 2 are collars on the large handle, and 3 are knobs upon the large handle. These knobs being for the purpose of a hand-hold when it is desired to change a load of brick from one person to another; also for lifting to and from an elevated position.
4 is a small handle designed for the purpose of being used in conjunction with the large handle to hold the invention open for the purpose of grasping a series of brick.
5 are set-screws by which the handle 4 is attached to the adjustable frame bar 9 and 10. The adjustable frame bar 9 has a serrated portion 13, upon which the serrated portion 12 of handle a is designed to be adjusted. There also being a slot 14, in the adjustable bar 9, and in the adjustable bar 10, which works just below the adjustable bar 9, there are designed several apertures 11, threaded for the set-screws 5 to be inserted, so that in case the serrated portion and slot did not give suflicient adjustment, the adjustment bars may be lengthened on each other by means of changing the setscrew to the other threaded portions 11, in the adjustable bar 10; and thus the invention adjusted to carry any number of brick that may be desired to carry. The levers 6 are formed with a ring which is designed to work upon the collars 2; one lever being pivoted to adjustment bar 9 by means of the pivot pin 8, and the other lever to the ad justable bar 10 by means of pivot pin 8. The lower end of these levers being made in a flange and at right angles with the main portion of the levers.
In the use of my invention the same is first held open as in Fig. 1 by gripping the two handles together, thus drawing the frame up close to the lifting handle, and the bodies which are desired to be lifted are alined, and the widened or flanged portion 7 of the levers 6 are lowered so as to grapple the out-side brick by being placed in con tact with the outer surface of the end bricks. Then the small handle 4 is released and the large handle is still retained in the grasp, by an upward pull on the large handle; thus the effect is to force the flanged portion of the lever against the surface of the brick with which they are in contact, and thus grapple the brick in such a way that the entire number of brick may be lifted. The pressure exerted against the end brick is suflicient to bind the intermediate brick in such a way as to prevent their displacement while free from support. When it is desired to release the lifting pressure the brick are lowered where the will have the support of their weight, am: the large handle is pressed down toward the small handle, and thus the frame opens, and then the smaller handle being grasped by one or more of the fingers, the frame may be lifted from the series of brick, and the series of brick thus released by exerting such pressure as will bring the two handles together, and cause the flanged portion 7 of the lever 6 to open and Withdraw from contact with the end bricks of the series.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured, by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination of two levers which are pivoted to two adjustable bars by means of pivot bolts and having a portion of each lever flanged and constructed so as to form a right angle with the main bar of said lever; such flanged portion having serrated faces, and the other ends of these levers having portions bent at right angles with the main bar of the lever in which there is an aperture of sufficient size to Work upon the collars of the main handle, a large handle, a small handle with serrated portions to operate in conjunction with the serrated portions of one of the adjustable bars; a slot in the adjustable bar; set-screw; and threaded apertures in the other adjustable bar, knobs on either end of the large handle, two adjustable bars, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
