Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed. December 29, 1908. Serial No. 469,822.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN L. Srnnons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Vi ashington, have invented a new and Improved. Grapple, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to grapples, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent ol' the United States, No. 905,010, granted to me November 2-1, 1908.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved grapple ior hoisting concrete blocks and other articles,
and having adjustable and reversible means to permit the use of the grapple for hoisting small and large blocks, and for grappling a block either outside or inside. i I
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view 01 the improvement as applied to a concrete block having double air spaces; and Fig. 2 an enlarged end view of the improvement as applied, the block being shown in cross section.
The grappling levers A, A of two pairs of said levers, are provided with adjustable and reversible grappling arms B, B adapted to be fastened to the corresponding grappling levers by set screws C or other fastening means. The free ends of the gra n'iline; arms B, B are provided with points D it or ongagcment with the block D, either at the inside, as shown in lull lines in Figs. 1 and 2, or at the outside of the block, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The inner ends of the grappling levers A, A of the two pairs of said levers are pivoted on a handle E, and the outer ends of the grappling levers A, A of each pair are pivotally connected by toggle links F, F with the corresponding ends oi a second handle G arranged a distance above the handle E. Stop pins H extend. upwardly from the fulcrum ends of the grappling levers A, A, to prevent the toggle links F, F from opening too far in a downward direction, that is, to leave suflicient space between the handles G and E for the operator to conveniently take hold of either of the handles when hoisting the block D, as hereinafter more fully explained.
By rel'crence to the drawings it will be seen that the grappling levers A, A are pro vidcd with suitable guideways for the grappling arms B, B to slide on, to permit of ad justing the said. grappling arms to blocks D oi diilerent sizes, and to allow of reversing the said grappling arms for engagement with the inside or outside of the block D. Now when the grappling arms B, B engage the inside of the block D, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2-, then the handle 6- becomes the carrying handle and is engaged by the operator taking holdv of this handle G to carry the block D about, it being understood that the operator on lifting the handle (3* causes a closing or the toggle links F, F, thus swinging the grappling levers A, A upward and moving the points B B" of the grappling arms B, B in firm contact with the inner walls of the block D. When it is desired to release the block D alter the same is deposited on a suitable support, it is only necessary for the operator to take hold of the releasing handle E with one of the lingers, to draw the carrying handle G toward. the releasing handle E, so that the pairs of grappling levers A, A are caused to open, thus disengaging the points B B from the inner wall of the block D.
When the grappling arms B, Bare arranged on the levers A, A for grappling the out-side ol' the block D, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, then the handle E becomes the carrying handle while the handle G- becomes the releasing handle, that is, the operator takes hold of the handle E to carry the block about and uses the handle Gr for releasing the bloclc alter the same has been taken to its destination. In this case the releasing handle G is drawn down toward the carrying handle E for disengaging the points B, B from the outer wall of the block D.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the grapple can be readily used for engaging a block at the inside or at the outside and for adapting the grapple to bloclts oi di'tl ercnt sizes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A grapple comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected with each other at their inner ends and carrying adjustable grappling arms for engagement with the article to be hoisted, a handle, and links connecting the other ends of the said levers with the said carrying handle.
2. A grapple comprising a handle, two pairs of levers, each lever carrying an adjustable grappling arm, a pair of links connecting each end of the said handle with a pair of the said levers, and a second handle, to each end of which a pair oi the said levers is pivoted.
3. A grapple comprising a pair of levers pivotally connected with each other at their inner ends and carrying adjustable and reversible grappling arms for engagement with the article to be hoisted, a handle, and links connecting the other ends of the said levers with the said carrying handle.
4. A grapple comprising a handle, two pairs of levers, each lever carrying an adjustable grappling arm, a pair of links connecting each end of the said. handle with a pair of the said levers, a second handle, to each end of I which a pair of the said levers is pivoted, and
stops for keeping the handles spaced apart. 5. A grapple comprising grappling levers I having reversible and adjustable grappling arms, a handle on which the said levers are fulcrumed, a second handle, and links connecting the said levers with the said second handle, either of the said handles being the carrying handle while the other is the releasing handle, according to the position of the grappling arms on their grappling levers. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
