HORSE-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1911.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Serial No. 622,103.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. BORDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolivar, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Horse-Collar, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in horse-collars, more especially fastenings for connecting the members or sections thereof together.
The invention has for its object, primarily to provide for adjustably connecting the collar sections or members together to accommodate the collar to the neck of the horse or animal to be fitted.
A further object is to provide for readily coupling together the parts or members of the connection, also to effect the ready separation of the parts.
A still further object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, inexpensive and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claim.
From the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the various details as relates to the construction and operation of the parts may be changed and modified as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 2 is a limited plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a lateral or edge elevation of the invention. Fig; 4 is an enlarged detailed sectional view taken through the couplin connection or fastening, and Figs. 5 an 6 are further detailed views pertaining to the fastening, coupling or connection.
In carrym out my invention, I suitably form the col ar sections or members 1 and the hame-members or sections 2 as shown, the respective collar sections and hame sections being inseparably connected or united, the collar sections or members being connected at the top by thestrap-extensions of the ordinary form of pad 3 as heretofore used at that point, said strap-extensions being preferably buckled as at at to stub-straps 5 secured to the collar-sections as usual.
Suitably secured laterally to the outer surfaces of the hame-members or sections are inflexible or metal-s1 raps 6, 6, the lower end portions of which are formed into approximately S-shaped outlines, as at 7 and 8, respectively. With he terminal of the lower leg of the S of tho member'or stra 6 is cast or formed a sleevr 9, said terminal being preferably straight or horizontal; and
within said sleeve is arranged a supplemental sleeve or tube 1 having a substantially circular or annular shoulder or stop 11, at one end, with a segment thereof removed as at 12, said shoulder enga ing a shoulder 13 upon the inner circum. erence or surface of the sleeve 9 having a straight lower surface 13, when he parts are in operative or effective position. The inner sup plemental sleeve 10 rece ives the preferably straight terminal of the lower leg of the S of the other strap 6, ant is provided with a set or holding screw 14 2 dapted to hold and allow of suitable adjustment of said terminal within said supplemental sleeve, as in providing for the rela1ive lateral adjustment of the collar and hame members or sections for accommodat .ng the same to the neck of the horse, as will be readily understood, These parts are readily assembled at the outset, when putt ng the collar upon the horse or animal, and effectively secured in position, by suitably introducing the ten minal of the lower leg 0: the S of the strap 6 into the sleeve 9, with the straight upper edge 12 of the shoulder 11 of the supplemental sleeve 10 so dispo :ed as to oppose the corresponding edge or surface 18' of the shoulder 13 of said sleep 9; and partially rotating or turning the sleeve 10 a limited extent; the set screw 14 Jhen being suitably manipulated to effect engagement with the terminal of the member 6, clamping the same in effective positic n in the sleeve 10 and all the arts accordingly in like position. In or er to discon iect or disassemble the parts, it is only necessary to loosen the set screw 14 and reversel I turn the sleeve 10 to again op ose the strai ght portion or ed e 12 of the s oulder 11 01 said sleeve to t e corres onding edge or portion 13' of the shoul er 13 of the sleeve 9, when the lower terminal of the member 6 may be readily withdrawn from said sle eve 9, allowing the separation of the collar and hame sections or members, for removal from the horse or animal.
The hame sect-ions or members are suitably equipped with tle usual tug and breast-stra ring-member 15 and rein guiderings 16, W ich however form no part of the invention.
It is considered apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying illustration that I have produced a device of this character which is easily adjusted for use upon the animal, as well as adapted to be readily accommodated to thesize of the neck, while it is simple, embracing a few parts, effective in operation, and may be inanufactured at the minimum cost or outclaim:
A device of the character described, including inflexible strap-members secured to the hame sections, the lower end portion of each of which is of an approximately S- shape, the lower terminals of said S-shaped portions extending horizontally, one horizontal terminal being formed with a sleeve closed at one end and open at the other having an interior shoulder at its open end, a rotatable supplemental sleeve arranged upon the other horizontal terminal and having a shoulder received within the first referred-to sleeve, the shoulders upon said sleeves being adapted for mutual engagement by the rotation of said rotatable sleeve within said first referred-to sleeve, and
.means for the retention of said rotatable sleeve in fixed position upon its carrying terminal and its shoulder with respect to the aforesaid shoulder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as in own, I have hereto afiixed my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
