APPLICATION FILED JAlL26, 1911.

HARRY M. REYNOLDS, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
PACKING ROOFING MATERIAL.
Application filed January 26, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Roofing Material; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improved means for packing rolls of roofing material, paper and other like goods, and its object is to provide a device that will sustain and support the end of the roll and effectually retain within the same any articles that may be placed therein, and will also furnish a metallic bushing for the roll in the event that it is placed upon a shaft and it consists essentially of a coil of resilient wire or rod, the coil being normally of somewhat greater diameter than the interior opening of the roll and retained in the end of the roll by frictional engagement with the same. This coil isprovided with an inwardly projecting end to support and retain the contents of the roll when anything is packed thereinas in case of roofing material, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a roll of material with my device inserted therein; Fig. 2 an enlarged detail of the wire coil; Fig. 3 an end elevation of a roll with my device therein; Fig. 4: a detail in longitudinal sec tion of the same; and Fig. 5 the same showing a modification adapting my device to serve as a bushing when the roll is to be placed on a shaft.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents a roll of roofing material, paper or other like goods.
2 represents a coil of resilient wire or rod, preferably round wire, one end of which is extended inward toward the axis of the coil as at 3 to retain any material that may be packed within the roll, as at 4, it being Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 604,869.
usual to place in these rolls of roofirg material, various nails, washers, and oth 31' like articles to be used in laying roofing. These coils of wire are inserted by turning the same into the end of the roll, in the manner of a screw, with any convenient tool such as blacksmith tongs applied to the pro ect-ing end 3. In case that no other goods are to be packed within the roll, this end nay be omitted and a different tool used to tr rn the coil into the end of the roll or if desirable the projecting end 3 can. be retained and when. the roll is to be placed upon the shaft said end can be cut off or removed with any suitable tool and the coil left within the roll to form a bushing whereby a metallic bearing for the shaft is provided.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a roll of material having an axial opening, a coil of w ire inserted in the end of said opening in the roll to support the inner layers of the roll and protect the same.
2. In combination with a roll of material having an axial opening, a coil of resilient wire inserted in the end of said openi: 1g and having its inner end adapted to retain other material in said opening.
3. In combination with a roll of material having an axial opening, a coil. of resilientwire of normally greater diameter tt an the said opening inserted in the end c f said opening and having its inner end turned inward toward the axis to retain other material in said opening and to facilitate inserting the coil in said opening.
4. In combination with a roll of ntaterial having an axial opening, coils of resilient wire inserted in the respective ends 3f said opening, each having one end inwardly turned to retain. other material in said opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY M. REYNOLDS.
Witnesses:
