Be it known that I, NATHAN C. PHILLIPS, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glue- Spreaders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide as a substitute for the usual bristle brush furnished with bottles of liquid glue or cement, a spreader made without bristles and adapted to remove glue from the bottle and readily and smoothly spread the same on a flat surface without liability of contact between the hand that manipulates the spreader and the freshly coated portion of said surface, the spreader being of simple, durable and inexpensive construction and adapted to be kept clean without lia bility of the glue drying upon the spreader and forming an objectionable accumulation thereon.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a perspective view showing my improved spreader in use on a flat surface; Fig. 2 represents an enlarged side view of the spreader; Fig. 3 represents an edge view of the same; Fig. 4 represents a section on line t-1 of Fig. 2 showing the spreader in the act of carrying glue from the bottle; Fig. 5 represents a view similar to Fig. 4: illustrating the operation of the spreader; and Fig. 6 represents a side view of the blank from which the spreader is or may be made.

My improved spreader comprises a blade having a narrow elongated spreading edge adapted to bear from end to end on a flat surface 12 on which a film or coating of glue is to be spread, and a handle whichis ofiset from the spreading edge so that when the spreader is in use the handle will be elevated above the surface 12 sufiiciently to prevent contact between the fingers and thumb which grasp the handle and the surface 12, provision being thus made for freely manipulating the device without liability of contact between the manipulating hand and the fresh coating of glue on the surface 12.

In the embodiment of my invention here shown, the same being the best that is at present known to me, 13 represents the spreading edge which is one of the longer edges of a flat oblong blade 1 1 of sheet metal, or other suitable material. The handle 15 is formed as an integral part of the blade let and is offset from the spreading edge 13 by being inclined relatively to said edge as shown. The blade and handle, as here shown, are made from a two-armed blank of substantially the form represented by Fig. 6, the arm 14 of the blank constituting the blade while the arm 15 constitutes the handle. The said arms are arranged at an obtuse angle with each other and the arm 15 is somewhat wider than the arm 1 1 and is bent or rolled laterally to form a stiffened handle which is inclined relatively to the spreading edge of the blade and is of com pact form, the distance between any two opposite sides of the handle being preferably less than the width of the blade. The handle is therefore adapted to be inserted in a relatively small orifice formed in the cap of a glue bottle. In operating the spreader, its spreading edge 13 and the charge of glue thereon are placed upon the surface 12, the handle 15 being inclined upwardly from and overhanging said surface. The blade is then moved laterally in opposite directions so that its sides are caused to push the charge of glue along the surface 12, the edge 13 at the same time spreading the glue into a thin film or coating 18.

The outer end 19 of the blade forms a spreading edge which is considerably shorter than the spreading edge 13, and is adapted for use in spreading glue on narrow surfaces.
