FEEDING ATTACHMENT FOR DISK-SHARPENERS.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES I. Dnrnw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loup City, in the county of Sherman and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Feeding Attachment for Disk-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable selffeeding attachments for disk sharpeners and is more particularly designed for use in connection with the machine disclosed in Patent No. 97 9,831, issued to me on December 27, 1910.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an attachment which can be readily placed upon the machine and can be adjusted to hold disks of different sizes in proper relation to the rollers, means being employed whereby thesaid disks can be swung into or out of engagement with the rollers without changing the positions of the adjustable supporting structure.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a disk sharpening machine showing the present improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the base member of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the top member of said attachment. Fig. 41 is a detail view of the supporting link.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of the base frame of the sharpening machine, said base supporting a block 2 mounted on a base plate 3, there being a shaft 4 journaled upon the block 2 having a disk roll 5 secured to one end thereof, this roll being adapted to cooperate with an upper roll not shown.
The parts above described do not constitute any part of the present invention but have been clearly disclosed in my patent hereinbefore mentioned.
The attachment constituting the present invention, consists of a slidable connection 6 adjustable in 'a seat 7-formed in the base plate 3 and mounted on a bracket 8 extending from the base 1, there being a series of openings 9 within the attaching portion any one of which is adapted to receive a fastening device engaging the bracket 8.
Ears 10 extend upwardly from the attaching portion 6 and journaled within these ears are trunnions 11 extending from the ends of a block 12. A main lever 13 is fulcrumed upon a stud 14 or the like extending from the block 12 and extends across and bears downwardly upon a top plate 15 in which is formed a straight longitudinal slot 16. An ear 17 extends downwardly from this plate and is pivotally connected to the upper end of a link 18, the lower portion of said link being slotted longitudinally as at 19 and engaged by a set screw 20 projecting into an ear 21, which extends upwardly and inwardly from a cross plate 22. This plate is secured to the base 1 as shown in Fig. 1. A set screw 23 extends from the main lever and into the slot 16 and by means thereof said lever 13 can be locked in any desired position upon the plate 15.
A bracket 25 is formed on the lever 13 and has a shifting lever 26 fulcrumed upon it. A disk engaging member 27 is mounted on this lever 26 at a point remote from the fulcrum thereof, said member being preferably of the form shown in my patent heretofore referred to.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the slide 6 constitutes an adjustable connection between the lever 26 and the supporting structure 1.
In using the attachment, the same is first adjusted to hold a disk of a predetermined size in proper relation to the roll 5. slidable portion 6 is adjusted longitudinally and secured so as to bring the fulcrum of lever 13 at a desired distance from the base 3. The screws 20 and 24: are loosened and lever 13 is shifted laterally about its fulcrum 14: until it has assumed a predetermined position and is then shifted upwardly or downwardly, carrying the link 18 therewith. The set screws 20 and 24: are subsequently tightened and, when a disk is placed on the holder 27 and the lever 26 swung in one direction, the marginal portion of the disk will be brought into the pass between the two rolls of the machine.
The I In view of the fact that lever 13 is mounted to swing upwardly and downwardly it will be apparent that the disk, when mounted on the holder 27 can thus be tilted to any desired angle relative to the sharpening rolls.
What is claimed is:
1. A feed attachment including a main lever mounted for lateral swinging movement, an adjustable connection between said lever and a supporting structure, atop member constituting the bearing for the lever, an adjustable support connected to the top member, and a disk holder movably mounted upon the lever.
2. A feed attachment including a main lever mounted for lateral swinging move- '.ment, a slidable connection between said lever and a supporting structure, said lever being mounted for up and down swinging movement relative to said connection, an adjustable support connected to and extending downwardly from the lever, and a disk holder movably mounted upon the lever.
3. A feed attachment including a main lever mounted for lateral swinging movement, a slidable connection between the lever and a supporting structure, a shifting lever fulcrumed upon the main lever, a disk holder carried thereby, a top member eonstituting a support for the main lever, means for securing the lever against movement relative to said member, and an adjustable support for said member.
4. A feed attachment including a lever mounted for lateral swinging movement, a shifting lever fulcrumed thereon, a disk holder carried by the shifting lever, a slidable connection between the main lever and a supporting structure, said lever being mounted to swing upwardly and downwardly relative to the connection, a slotted top member constituting a bearing for the main lever, means for securing said lever against movement relative to the top member, a base member for attachment to a supporting structure, and an adjustable connection between the top and base members.
