Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST SEGEL, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in brushes and has for its object the provision of a brush which is adapted to different uses and may be conveniently carried in the pocket.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a top plan view of a brush embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3, an enlarged end elevation of the brush, Fig. 4, a partial section taken on line lcof Fig. 3, Fig. 5, a perspective view of one of the slide plates employed in the construction, Fig. 6, a perspective view of the other slide plate employed in the construction, Fig. 7, a central transverse section of the brush, Fig. 8, a view showing the brush in position for use as a hat brush, and Fig. 9, a view showing the brush in position for insertion into the pocket.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises two similar brush sections l which are made of a comparatively narrow width as shown, the sections being connected together at their ends by means of slide plates pivoted to said ends and slidably engaging each other. This connection is effected by means of slide plates 2 and- 3 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. The slide plate 2 has its sides bent to form guide flanges 4 which are provided at their outer ends with stop lips 5 as shown in Fig. 5. Between the anges 4 plate 2 is provided with a longitudinal slot 2. At its inner end plate 2 is provided with a rivet hole 6 for the accommodation of a pivoting rivet 7 which serves to pivotally secure said guide plate to a U-shaped securing plate 8 mounted on the corresponding end of one of the brush sections, the end of said section being recessed to receive the head of said rivet as shown in Fig. 4.

The other slide plate 3 is slidably mounted in the flanges 4 of plate 2 and'is provided at its outer central portion with a struck-up boss or lug 9 adapted to cooperate with the lips 5 to limit the outward movement of said plates. At its inner end plate 3 is provided with a pivoting boss 3 and a rivet hole 10 for the accommodation of a pivoting rivet 1l, which engages securing plate 12 secured to the corresponding end of a brush section, the boss 3 being adapted to slide in the slot 2 to permit relative adjustment of the guide plates. The securing plates 8 and l2 are let into the corresponding ends of the brush sections l so as to permit said brush sections to closely approach each other and elongated linger recesses 13 are provided in the inner sides of said brush sections, and finger notches 14 are provided in their outer sides for convenience in manipulating said brushes. By this arrangement it will be observed that said brush sections may be readily adjusted toward and away from, each other and swung to any desired position on their pivoting rivets.

In use the brush sections l are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 9 for carrying in the pocket. When it is desired to employ the brush as an ordinary clothes brush, the same is removed from the pocket and adjusted to the position illustrated in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, and 7, and when it is desired to employ the brush as a hat brush it is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 8. Vhen use of the brush is discontinued, the same is readjusted to the position shown in Fig. 9, when it may be readily inserted and carried in the pocket. Thus it will be observed that the brush may be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user and readily adjusted to different positions adapted for different uses.

IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A brush comprising two brush sections mounted to coperate with each other, and to be adjustable toward and away from each other, each of said brushes being pivoted in its mountings, substantially as described.

A2. A brush comprising two brush sections; and slides pivoted to each end of each of said sections, the slides on the corresponding ends of said sections slidably engaging each other, substantially as described.

3. A brush comprising two brush sections; and slides pivoted to each end of each of said sections, the slides on the corresponding ends of said sections slidably engaging each other, and said slides being provided with stops arranged to limit outward movement, substantially as described.'

A brush comprising two brush sections; and slides pivoted to each end of each of said sections, the slide on one end of one of said sections consisting of a sheet metal plate having its sides bent to form guide flanges, said anges being provided with stop lips at their ends, the slide on the corresponding end of the other` section consisting of a sheet metal plate slidably engaging said ianges, the central portion thereof being struck-up at the end to form a stop lug cooperating with said lips to limit the outward movement of said slides, substantially as described.
