To all persons to whomthese presents shallcome:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WELLS, of Salem,

'in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds, and that the following is a full and exactdescription of` the same, reference being had to the accompanying'plate of drawings. My invention consists in the peculiar construction of springs, in combination' with reversible slats.

It also consistsl in the constructiouof' a head-rest,

`as will be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying plate of drawings` my improvements in bedsteads are illustrated-4 Figure '1 being a plan view of abcd-frame, showing its slats, hung by springs and otherwise arranged, and

constructed according to the same;

` thacend fastened to the inner face of rails O of a bedframe, along which 'they extend, passing by their' straight portion c through fixed staples d, and from thence at right angles to `thel ends of slats by pins a, of which they are connected therewith, as before stated. rWith weight upon the slats, the springs by which 4 they are hung, in giving thereto, .act both torsionally and spirally, to hold the slatse-torsionally through i the straight portion, and spirally as well as torsionally through the spiral portion', whereby a most thorough :and perfect spring action -is obtained, as is obvious.

As the slats by pins are hung to open eyes of the sp1ings,'th`ey are tree to be detached therefrom at f pleasure, and reversed in position, end for end, if so desired, with either'l side uppermost, thus enabling them to be so changed from time to time as to prevent their becoming set.

M, a frame hung to and between the side rails B o f bed-trame A proper, and atone end thereof.

Thisframe M is formed of parallel side pieces N, by one end of which it is pivoted to the side rails C, their other ends connected together bya cross-rail or slat, O, in the present instancevrmly attached in any suitable manner. This frame M is provided for a head-rest to the bed-frame, and it is intended to attach to it prop-sticks for supporting it at a greateror lesser inclination, as may be desired.

This slat is arranged on the frame, between the fixed slat O thereofand its point of hanging to the bed-frame A, and has attached to it at cach end a spring catch, l, in the present instance','b`oth made of one and the same piece of metal fastened at the center to the under side of the slat.

The spring catchesZ-are arranged to interlock with notches on of suitable shape therefor, made in and along the inner faces of side rails, to rest frame, and by them, in connection with'said notches, the slat' to which theyare applied is. secured, and held in posiltion upon the said frame, they allowing, also, as is ob vions, the slat to he adjusted and set at di'erent points across the rest-frame, whatever may he its inclination relative to the bed-frame f, pushers for operating spring .of adjustment thereon, less slats are necessary, and thus the said frame can be more compactly and closely folded down with the bed-frame, when not desired to be used. i 1 Y vHaving thus described my improvements, I shall state my claim, as follows: n t

`What Ifclaim, and desire to have secured to me -by Letters Patent, isv 1. In combination with the reversible slats D of the springs G, which are coiled at H, extended transversely at o, and continued at iight angles to the point ofjnnction with .the slats, in connection with the bearings d, whereby-the axes of the springs are on the transverse portions c, and -the coils act spirally and torsionally, as set forth.

2."lhe Acombination with the hinged frame M of the sliding slat P and spring catches Las set forth, for the purpose described.
