To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. Bn'rrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in AcetyleneLamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to acetylene lamps of the kind in which the water is caused to drop upon the carbid and which comprise a lamp body containing the burner, a water reservoir in rear of the lamp body, and at the bottom of the lamp body a vessel for containing the carbid and generating the gas.
The object of the invention is to produce an efficient lamp of this kind in which the several parts are compactly and conveniently arranged and durably secured together, so that the lamp is capable of withstanding rough usage.
In the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a lamp provided with these improvements. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of the joint by which the generating vessel is detachably secured to the lamp body. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the generating vessel detached. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in line 44, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section in line 5-5, Fig. 1.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the shell of the lamp body, preferably of horizontal cylindrical form, having its front 10 provided with the usual glass or lens 11 and containing in its rear portion a reflector 12 which is secured to an annular collar 13 in the rear portion of the shell. The top 14 of the lamp body is of any suitable form and provided with outlets for the products of combustion.
15 represents an acetylene burner of any suitable construction which is mounted upon a horizontal circular bottom or boss 16 formed in the lower portion of the lamp body in front of the reflector. This bottom or boss has an upright cylindrical wall 17 and forms a shallow cylindrical recess in the under side of the lamp body, the latter being provided outside of this boss and in front of the reflector with openings 18 for supplying air to the burner.
B represents the water reservoir which is secured to the rear end of the shell A in rear of the reflector and which closes the rear end of the shell and conforms in outline to the same. The shell is provided between the reflector and the water reservoir in its lower and upper portions with openings 19, 20 for permitting air to circulate through the space between the reflector and the reservoir in order to keep the water cool. The reservoir is provided near its bottom with a water dischargg pipe 21 which extends forwardly into the lamp body underneath the reflector and through the supporting collar 13 thereof, and opens downwardly through the bottom or boss of the shell, preferably, as shown, at the middle thereof.
The water reservoir is provided with any suitable valve mechanism for controlling the discharge of water through the pipe 21. In the preferred construction, which is shown in the drawings, the pipe 21' communicates with a valve chamber 22 secured in the lower portion of the reservoir and having above said pipe a seat for a vertically movable valve 23. The stem 24 of this valve extends diametrically through the reservoir and is provided near its upper end with a screw thread 25 and a turn button 26. This screw thread engages in a threaded socket 27 secured in the upper portion of the reservoir and rigidly connected with the valve seat in the lower portion thereof by a sleeve 28, which receives the strain exerted by the valve stem in tightening the valve against its seat, whereby the reservoir, which is made of comparatively light sheet metal, is relieved of this strain. This sleeve is provided above the valve seat with an inlet 29 for the water.
C represents the gas generating vessel which is detachably secured to the lamp body beneath the bottom or boss 16 so as to receive the water from the pipe 21 and deliver the gas to the burner 15. The vessel is provided with a grate or screen 30 upon which the carbid 31 rests and which permits the residue to drop through. The vessel is provided above the grate with an upright water pipe 32 arranged underneath the outlet of the pipe 21 and having at its lower end above the grate a distributing head 33 by which the Water is delivered to the carbid. This upright pipe is supported on the grate by a stem 34: arranged below the distributing head and soldered to the grate, and at its upper end by a cross piece 35 of wire or other suitable material which extends diametrically across the neck 36 of the vessel.
The vessel is provided at the base of the neck 36 with a horizontal annular shoulder 37 upon which rests a packing ring 38 which is pressed against the lower end of a fixed collar 39 extending downwardly from the shell A about in line with the cylindrical wall 17 of the boss 16 of the shell. This collar is provided with an external shoulder 4L0, Fig. 2, upon which bears a rotatable collar 41 which has its lower portion provided with an internal screw thread 42 engaging an external thread 43 on the vessel. By turning the collar 41 the vessel can be drawn with its packing ring against the fixed collar 39 of the lamp body or be released therefrom. The external screw thread 413 is preferably formed, as shown, on an annularband 44: which is secured to the outer side of the vessel and projects above the horizontal shoulder 37 sufliciently to form with said shoulder and the neck of the vessel a depressed seat in which the packing ring is confined and held against spreading.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a horizontal shell provided at its front end with a lens and at its rear end with a water reservoir, a gas burner secured in the lower portion of the shell between the ends thereof, a gas generating vessel depending from said shell be tween said reservoir and said lens and connecting with said burner, and a reflector arranged within the rear portion of said shell and separated from said reservoir by an air circulating space which is located to the rear of said generating vessel, the shell being provided between the reflector and the reservoir and to the rear of the generating :XEIGSSiEIl with air openings, substantially as set ort 2. The combination with a lamp body ing from said reservoir to said boss, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a lamp body comprising a shell having a bottom carrying a burner, and a fixed collar extending downwardly from said bottom and provided with a projection, of a gas generating vessel provided with a neck extending into said collar and having at the base of said neck a shoulder, a packing resting on said shoulder and bearing against said fixed collar, an external screw thread on said vessel, and an internally threaded rotatable collar engaging said screw thread and bearing upon said projection on said fixed collar, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a lamp body comprising a shell having a bottom carrying a burner and having a fixed collar extending downwardly from said bottom and provided with a projection, of a gas generating vessel provided with a neck extending into said collar and having at the base of said neck a shoulder and a part forming with said shoulder a depressed seat for a packing ring, a packing ring confined in said seat and bearing against said fixed collar, an external screw thread on said vessel, and an internally threaded rotatable collar engaging said screw thread and bearing upon said projection on said fixed collar, substantially as set forth.
