Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HOLLISTER, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS. i
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLE-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,698, dated June 9, 1874; application filed February 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HoLLrsTER, of Quincy, of the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candle-Burners; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a vertical section, and Fig. 2 an under-side view, of the removable top part thereof containing my invention. Fig. 3 is a top view of the portion with which the said top part is combined or upon which it rests.
The purpose of my invention is not only to prevent waste of the material of the candle, but the running down of the melted material upon the candle and into its socket or holder, so as to interrupt the proper upward movement of the candle.
In order to carry out the first part of my invention I arrange underneath the foraminous cup, which supports the wick-tube and surrounds it, an annular chamber to encompass the candle, and lit to or nearly fit to it. Such chamber I usually provide with an an nular flexile packing of leather, or other suitable heat-non-conducting packing, to fit to the candle, and prevent escape of the milled part thereof down into the candle-holder. I also provide the candle-holder with a trough or channel, and an abutment arranged therein, all as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A denotes the candle socket or holder; B, the candle; and O, the removable cap, supporting the wick-tube a, carrying the wick b. The cap O is usually held to the candle-holder by a bayonet connection. The wick-tube is arranged within, supported by, and extends through, a foraminous cup, e. Beneath the cup c, and to surround it and the candle, and t to the circumference of the latter,'is the annular chamber or recess d, having its bottom entirely of metal, or provided at its lower edge next the candle with an annular packing or ring, e, of leather, or other suitable material, to t to the candle, and readily permit it to rise or move upward under pressure of its elevating-spring j', as occasion may require. cept the melted matter of the wick, and prevent such matter from running down upon the candle and into its holder. Furthermore, the said chamber retains the melted matter to supply it to the foramiuous cup, as may be necessary. In order to further intercept the waste melted matter of the candle, I arrange in the upper part of the holder O an annular trough, k, extending around the candle and directly underneath the exile packing e. This trough I usually lill with sponge i, or other proper absorbent material, on which the packing e will rest, the same being to intercept and absorb any of the melted material that may pass through the packing, and be likely to fall therefrom The candle used in the burner has no wick going axially through it, but is a solid cylinder of parafline-wax, tallow, or other suitable material or materials. The wick, arranged above the candle, is supported in a tube open at its ends, the candle, by means of a spring, being forced up to the tube, and the foraminous cup supporting it.
I claim as my invention as follows, viz:
l. The iiexile packing-ring c, arranged and combined with the annular chamber or recess d, the wick-tube a, and its foraminous supporting-cup c, all substantially as described.
2. The trough 7c, combined with the candleholder A, the flexile packing c, and its annular chamber or recess d, surrounding or to surround the candle B, all being substantially as described.
3. The trough k and the mass of sponge i, combined with the candle-holder A, the {iexile packing e, and its annular chamber or recess d, surrounding or to surround the candle B, all being substantially as specified.
GEORGE HOLLISTER.
IVitnesses:
